Help me decide on a Treadmill

DigDug

I'm planning on buying a treadmill to use everyday in my apartment. I know nothing about the makes, sizes, and quality levels of treadmills. Do any of you have any adivce or knowledge regarding thwese things? I want to be a pretty good one, but not necessarily the flagship models of the various manufacturers.

Thanks for your input!

How much are you looking to spend? Honestly, you might as well sign up for a gym membership. You can buy some cheap piece of crap for $300 and have it last about a year, maybe two before the motor goes out. Or just run outside. If you're going to buy something good, it'll run about $600-700. For that price you can get a 3 year membership to a gym.

i tend to agree with this advice. at the gym you have a wide variety of cario machines, as well. treadmills, bike, elliptical machines, stair climbers, swimming pools, etc.

it just seems that too many people buy a treadmill that will just collect dust.

edit: otherwise, you should google some buying guides:

Make sure the deck is long enough for you to run on in. Try it out in the store, so you know for sure.

Keys and Smooth make good treadmills. I have a ProForm, which is the brand Dick's Sporting Goods sells, and for the 2 years I've owned it, it's served me well.

Also, consider joining a health club, instead. You could end up paying less, or about the same over a 2 year period for that membership as you would on the treadmill. Plus you get the benefit of using all of their equipment, not just one device.

buy it used. you will sell it in a year anyway. 😉

also, i hope to god you're on the ground floor, because there's no way your neighbors will put up with it if you're above them.

Treadmill? Why not an elliptical? You get a better workout with less impact that can ruin your hips and joints.

LOL yep pretty much the case a lot of times.

Personally I don't see the appeal of treadmills, my dad sounds like a charging elephant when he runs on his.

Seriously, get a gym membership. At least for me, when I'm at home, I'm not motivated to work out. I'd rather sit on my butt. When I'm at the gym it's like, well, I'm here, might as well work out.

Plus all the other reasons stated in the thread for going to a gym.

My wife and I use our all winter long. When you run for 30-45 minutes, the cold air is really harsh on the lungs. Also, ice is a biatch. You hit that when you are in the zone, and it's all over.

Get a gym membership... treadmills break down after awhile. But for treadmills, i really like the Life Fitness ones.. i think they are top of the line.

I agree with alot of what's already been posted, but if you're dead set on getting a treadmill, I'd go with a Landice.

I currently own the Landice Pro Trainer with the extended L8 deck. The thing is like an aircraft carrier though....weighs 400lbs or so. But it's indestructible. I've had it for 5+ years now, and I've never even had to do maintenance on the thing. If you buy anything new from Landice, you'll pay a pretty penny for it (between 1k-5k, depending on model), so buy a used one. If you're looking for overall fitness, a gym membership is probably more worth your money, for reasons already stated by others. If a gym's not readily accessible, then you're best bet is to spend a little more money upfront and buy something that will last vs. buying a piece of cheap crap that won't make it through the year.
