I'm looking mainly at the Daisy model 95 timberwolf:
Specs: spring air, 700 round capacity, 325 fps velocity, .177 caliber BB, 212 yard range. $38

... and the 840 grizzly
Specs: Single pump pneumatic, 350 rnd BB repeater, single shot pellet. 300bb/320 pellet velocity, 211 yard range. $32

Probably leaning toward the Grizzly because I could shoot pellets. Is there a difference between spring air and single pump pneumatic?I've had no experience with pellet/air rifles. I just want something $30-50 range, so other suggestions are welcome. It would be mostly for targets and tin can shooting :))), so nothing competitive.

Coming into this thread, i thought you were meaning as in single-shot, break barrel high powered pellet rifles...
If you're interested in paying a little bit more, me my brother and my dad have GAMO guns, I think theyre great.
GAMO USA Site
Me and my bro have the 'Delta' (MSRP - 89.99)
VELOCITY - 525 FEET PER SECOND
SINGLE SHOT
BRAKE BARREL - SINGLE COCKING SYSTEM
AUTOMATIC COCKING SAFETY SYSTEM
COCKING EFFORT:-21 LB.
BARREL - PRECISION RIFLED STEEL
ACCURACY. 0.25" GROUPS AT 30 YARDS (CENTER TO CENTER)
TRIGGER: 2 STAGE - 1ST STAGE ADJUSTABLE
MANUAL SAFETY

WEIGHT - 4.2 LB
LENGTH - 37.8"
AMMUNITION - PELLETS OF ALL SHAPES
CALIBER - .177
TRIGGER PULL - 3.3 LB

Sorry it doesnt exactly fit in your price range :D but mine is basically for the same usage of turning anything (mostly cans and various food items, mostly broccoli with toothpicks to make it look like a 'broccoli man' :)) into swiss cheese. Generally the brake barrel single shot pellet guns have higher FPS velocities than the bb guns, and i dont know, just feel better. The multi round, pump guns are kinda weird to me, but thats personal preference and pricerange guess.

I'd rather go for the pellet gun, way more accurate than BBs. Had my fair share of BB guns in my time. Just becare not to break any windows :)

I just found another daisy rifle, I guess because they are so common, that about the same price as the two, but is multi- pump pneumatic, 650 fps and single shot pellet. I was looking for one with a rifle barrel, and it's got a rifled steel barrel. The other two were smooth bored. I'm only 14, and the website states plainly that they are reccomended for 16 years or over. Although my father would be buying it, I think I'm going to have a hard time convincing him. ;) I also heard something about toxic lead in pellets. Is this in most of them? I don't exactly want to be handling that.

Exuse some of my n00bishness, this is just going to my first air rifle.

Personally I would buy one that is capable of shooting both BB's and pellets, but that is your choice. Single pump pnuematics and spring air guns CAN be the same functionally... but generally Single Pump Pneumatic is used to refere to an airgun that compresses the air with a piston, but the piston then returns to a rest state, an air chamber stores the air until you pull the trigger which then opens an air valve to fire the BB or pellet. There is no recoil with these types as there is with a spring air gun. The impact of the piston forcing the air into the firing chamber is noticeable.

BTW rifled barrels work best with pellets, almost useless with BB's

Well all pellets have lead, lead is to an extent, toxic i guess you could say but its not like its radio active or anything. Just dont eat them or shoot a lot then eat something with your fingers without cleaning up first, I do anyway so its not a problem but its just lead, that makes them soft and allow them to contour to the rifling of the barrel and compensate for the not-so-exact moldings of them. 650 fps is plenty, as long as its accurate, my dads is 1000 and its FUN.

I think I've narrowed it down to one of the high power single shots or the BB and pellet gun. I'm leaning a bit toward the daisy single shot, but still looking at that GAMO. If I go the pellet route, how much of a difference in accuracy and power are there between pellets? If it's pretty small, I'll pick up some cheap stuff. I already have the go ahead from the parents to shoots targets and rats, but there's some grey area with other rodents :). I'm looking forward to buying it soon.

Do you mean what is the accuracy difference between different pellets? Not much, basically weight and tip for different applications...

I think I've settled on the daisy single shot pellet. If the parents don't want me using that, i'll back down to the 840 grizzly. Probly buying it today. Oy, I shouldn't be up at 4. :Q time for sleep guys.

I had one of those pump up daisy's when I was your age. (back in the 70's) :Q They still make them, cost about $30 back then... It is a heck of a nice gun, really accurate. The ability to change the velocity, by pumping up to 10 times or not, was a nice feature. If it's not too late, think about a pump up gun some more.

We only rarely used pellets. bb's loaded into a chamber in the gun, and were almost self loading. Very convenient.

Have fun.

I'm really excited. I bought a crossman 764SB from Big 5 on sale for $45. Better than any online price and a sweet gun with an optical 4x scope. Black and silver, 5 pellet magazine, 200 BBs. 625 FPS and multiple pump, thanks for the suggestion :). I bought 1500 copperhead BBs and 25 targets. A nice 17 inch steel barrel, but smooth bore. Oh well, it's still really cool! Thanks for the input, guys.
