I was majoring in Computer Science but I wanted Computer Internet Systems. I now found out that computer engineering is the #1 job right now. It has an average pay of 70,000 dollars. I need to stay in the computer/internet field because that is the only thing I can see myself doing. I?m all confused though because computers are such a broad field as to where I should end up. Anyone got some advice. By the way, I?m a student at Polytechnic University.

Do what you think you would be happy doing as a career for the next 20 years. Who cares about the starting pay for each field, if you hate the job then whats the point.

If you go comp. engineering, I suggest you like/are good at math and physics.

While I like making some fun programs here and there I find programming to be very boring and I actually despise learning such languages as. C++ or Pascal. I?m not that good an artist even though I made some interesting Macromedia flash sites of some silly things. I have built a lot of computers by hand for people and tuned them etc. I guess in essence, I find myself addicted to the Internet. Not just chatting or looking at websites but the things that makes it work. I?m confused I don?t know what I want my parents rather have me be a doctor but they support any decisions I make completely. I guess I'm looking for feedback from people in different fields that are involved with computers so I can get an idea of everything. A friend of mine is in the FBI as some kind of agent after finishing as an architect. He got some nice benifts from that. I don't know guys, thanks anyway.

Definetly make sure that you do something you like. Making a lot of money do something you hate blows.

I would have to agree with Qman. I have met many people in my life that were doing something they hate, just for the money. They all had one thing in common, they were miserable.

Get a college degree. Use that to go into the Air Force as an Officer. Retire in 20 years, get a job doing the same thing with your State Government. retire in 15 at 55 years with two pensions. Think about getting married. :) In that order.

I agree with some of the other comments in this thread. Definately do something that you like. My cousin just graduated from high school and he told me point blank "What area of computers should I go into that will make me the most money". He doesn't give a flying hoot about computers other than using AIM, downloading mp3's, and burning CD's. I guarantee you that whatever job he finds he is going to be miserable after a year or so on the job. Whatever happened to people getting jobs doing something they love (or at least like)?

I myself am trying to find a job doing tech support of some sort and then eventually once I get the expereince going into some sort of networking field. I didn't choose these fields because I can make alot of money (although that is a nice bonus :)), I like solving comoputer problems so that's why I'm going into the computer field.

Having said all that, I'm sure it will be only a matter of time before someone comes in here and starts arguing with me about a job being a job and who cares if you like what you do :D

i'm doing computer engineering now. still deciding if i want to stay in this particular field of computers or not. I particularly like working hands on w/ computers.. maybe i should have went into more of a networking field. but i'm also interested in business... heh.. all these decisions.... i feel if i don't make a solid one, i'll be wasting my time in college :( heh, kinda rambled there.. but yeah, like these guys said, just gotta find something you like, and do it. I too looked partially at the money because i was looking into the field.

Im majoring in MIS (Management Information Systems). Its like the business-end of Computer Science. It deals with networks, software and some hardware.

I went into University thinking that Computer Science was the only major for me. After my first Programming (C++) class, I decided to change majors. I couldnt see myself sitting in front of a computer writing code all day long. In fact, I rather hate C++.....I almost failed it too.

Anyway, try it out, you can always switch majors.

From what I read I think I'm going to lean towards networking or engeenering. I will see for the fall semester if I can have both majors. Thanks, Dave

Infedelity, do what makes you happy! I was majoring in Biology during my first two years of college to make my parents happy, since they wanted me to become a doctor. And I realized while I was taking my MCAT prep course that I didn't want to become a doctor anymore. So I decided to take up computer science because my roommate's cs projects seemed so interesting to me. And I'm very glad that I did that despite one extra year in college that I'll have to spend because I'm doing something I like.

On a side note, does anyone know of any sites that are tailored towards discussions tech career related topics like this thread?
