Help me Decide: DirectTV or Cable

Hi all,

I need TV in my apartment 🙂
I have 2 choices: DirectTV or CableTV.
I want the monthly payment under $40.
Complete Basic Cable = $35.50
DirectTV Total Choice = $31.99

Also what's the difference between Total Choice, Total Choice Plus and Total Choice Premier?
What kind of equipment I have to buy to get DirectTV?
There's 2 TV in my apartment and I want both of TV can watch and I have TVCapture in my PC.

Thanks.

I'll help you a bit.

You can find the difference by viewing the packages at www.directv.com I can't explain it any better than they do.

What kind of equipment I have to buy to get DirectTV?

A dish and receiver package.

There's 2 TV in my apartment and I want both of TV can watch and I have TVCapture in my PC.

Then you'll need a three receiver package and dish.

cable if you have more than one tv...

we have 4 tv's at our house connected (all 6 outlets are activated but only 4 tv's). no additional monthly fees. still the standard $37. with dish you gotta pay $5 more per receiver and you need one receiver per tv. and each dish only works for 2 receivers. dish doesn't include local channels so you either need an antenna or add $7 or $8 to your dish fee per month. i cannot get local channels downstairs no matter what so cable was cheaper for us.

no equipment to buy either since our house is prewired.

If you only have 1 TV and you don't like watching locals and you can install a dish, then you may want to go for DirecTV. If you have more than 1 TV you will have to pay an additional $5/TV so the price you listed is $32 + $5 = $37. Don't forget to add in the cost of the dish/receiver as a 1 time cost. I don't have locals in my market so I would miss out on that. In the end I went with cable and couldn't be happier.

In my area, to get digital cable, you need a cable box for each TV, and they charged me a 4.99 monthly fee for each box. I believe this is the norm for digital cable in most, if not all areas. It's the same thing Direct TV does.

Don't compare BASIC analoge 70 channel cable to DirecTV. Compare Digital 100+ channel cable to DirecTV.

Oklahoma City, OK can receive local channels. Other areas cannot. But that's not really a problem. You have two choices for local channels if DirecTV cannot offer them to you:

A: Keep the cheapest cable package (usually between $5 and $10 a month) for local channels.
B: Set up an antenna. Most people who have HDTVs are setting up Antennas to get local digital channels now.

BTW, you can have more than 2 receivers connected to 1 dish if you have a multiplexor... so I hear. So you don't have to buy multiple dishes if you have more than 2 TVs. Last I heard, a multiplexor ran about $80.

And AFAIK, DirecTV will charge you a few bucks extra for local channels and a few bucks extra for that second receiver (for that 2nd TV). Cable is less clarity, but you can also take advantage of cable internet.

Tough choice, but I'd go with DirecTV.

You can have cable internet even if you don't have cable TV. I have DirecTV and cable internet.

Yes of course, but cable companies give you a price break on cable internet if you have their TV service. That's all I was getting at. DirecTV has DirecWay DSL, but they cap yo @$$ during peak hours. 😉 Besides, cable internet > DSL, IMO.

Yeah, I agree. If you are in an area with good cable internet service, DSL usually can't come close. My cable company (Insight) will give a $10 discount on cable internet service ONLY if you have digital cable with all the STBs and extra charges. So even though I get some local channels with basic $10/month cable service, they do not discount my internet service.

No big deal, I STILL save money with DirecTV and get better PQ as well.

Remember guys, no more DTV DSL and the directway satellite is only for those who don't have any other broadband options.

Yep, satellite internet has really crappy ping times.

DirectTV reception will be very poor during a heavy rainstorm due to its frequency signal being absorbed by the rain drops...so if you live in a rainny place..i would go for cable tv instead.

I'm in the midwest. It's rainy here, and snowy. I've lost reception once when we had a very wet snow and the wind was blowing in just the right direction. In fact, during this last blizzard, I didn't lose reception at all.

In the same time period, I've lost cable countless times.
