Help me cure my Poison Ivy before Prom!

I've got some sweet looking poison ivy all over my right forearm. (Well not all over... only about 11 or so bubbles). In fact I don't even know if it is poison ivy but I am sure it is poison something...

I woke up with it Friday morning. It really doesn't itch AT ALL unless I get really sweaty from working outside in the sun. Other than that it does not itch. I have been putting Calamine lotion and some Benadryl lotion on it. Prom is this Thursday. What should I do? It doesn't appear to be getting better-- should I pop those bubbles? It's not spreading at all so far...

Thanks

You should have your date rub the lotion on your arm. Who knows where that will go? ;)

If Billy boy here has any, um, after-prom activities planned, it would be a good idea to get it cured before his date freaks and thinks he has something

There's a product called IvaRest... it may not be gone by Thu., but it sure will take away the itch. My bro. had it once and it cleared it up in a couple weeks, no itching.

Don't pop the bubbles. All of the fluid in those bubbles will spread, and its difficult to get them to quit "oozing". Your best bet is to go to the doctor. I get poison ivy real bad. My doctor usually gets me something like Tricilimone, or Tri - somthing. If it gets really bad, they have some sort of steroids you can take, but steroids are one of those things you have to tell the doctor about if are going to have any sort of operation or anything within a year or 2.

The best thing is to talk to the doc, but there are a couple of other things that help. There is a laundry soap bar that really drys your skin out that works well. It's called feldsnaptha. The coborns here used to have it, but then they didn't get stuff from that supplier any more. It pulls all of the oil out of your skin. When I couldn't find that I used powdered tide, or any kind of powdered laundry detergent. This is just stuff that worked for me. Not my fault if you have an alergic reaction or anything. :)

emergency cure for poison oak/ivy/sumac: if the affected area is relatively small, you can scrape the skin off, cement works well for this. You end up with a big roadrash like scrape, but at least it doesnt itch. and your date's not going to be afraid to touch someone who "fell off a skateboard" like she would be of someone with poison ivy.

Yes, I've done this before, but only on small, highly itchy areas of poison oak.b

just rub the affected area on your balls, the sweat from them will cure the rash.

OK guys-- thanks for the advice! Keep it coming... I sure as hell don't want my date freaking out - and we are going out to a club afterwards so i don't think a forearm covered in poison ivy will attract the ladies. Hmm "notfred's" idea is not bad-- but i would have a foot long road rash-- not good. Hmm how should I put the powdered Tide on? Wet my arm and then pour it all over? Aghhh!!

I dont recommend this but:
In the shower, use a washcloth or something rough to break open all the skin,
as soon as you get out, soak another washcloth in gasoline, throw it over the affected area.
It'll burn but this pretty much kills it.
NOTE: the gas will be absorbed into your system which is why I don't recommend it.
You can use Witch hazel or rubbing alcohol instead but you will still need to cover it with
Caladryl or the like.
This will probably not clear it up by Thursday.
You should really go to a dermatologist, he can give you a shot or pilss that will clear it up pretty quickly
but if you went tomorrow ( Tue) I don't remember if it will clear that fast ( by Thur).

I spent several years lanscaping every summer so this always worked for me ( the Alcohol, not the gasoline)

Good luck.

you know that benedryal lotion? it will get rid of almost anything that itches, bug bites, hives, you name it. Give that a shot. All poison ivy is an allergic reaction but prettymuch everybody reacts to it. If the lotion doesn't work you can try taking the pills but some people are knocked out by those things, they can make you sleepy. IMO give the benedryal lotion a try.

The BS spinning around this thread is amazing.

Scratching will not spread the rash unless you have the plant oil under your nails - one hot shower and a change in clothes fixes that (don't forget your shoes may be oily)

Any antihistamine with reduce swelling and itching - this is good.

Topical treatments that work:
Calamine - duh
Alcohol or Witch Hazel- initially feels good, but also has the benefit of drying it up.
Antiperspirant (roll-on or spray) same as alcohol
First Aid Cream - cools when applied and may or may not reduce itching.

My advice:
Wake up in the morning - the rash will probably itch a lot at this time of day
Take a hot shower - wash vigourously with soap and washcloth (scratch if you must)
Dry off
Apply rubbing alcohol to rash and let dry
Apply calamine to rash
Take 2 sudafed or benadryl
Wear clothing that with not irritate the rash.

repeat 4-7 as necessary.

Your rash will be gone ASAP with this method.

If the rash is just on your forearm area, then I don't think there's really a significant problem. Poison Ivy is unable to spread from person-to-person (unless the bubbles did pop; but remember, the liquid would have to go through your two layers of clothing to the other person, which would be hard).

If it's not irritating you that much, just take some precaution and put some lotion on before going out. Perhaps you should take a small bottle with you.

Don't fret and have a good time.
