Ok guys, i've got a asus a7n8x- deluxe and i've got a cooling problem, actually 2 of them, my room mate has the same setup as I do.

Ok we both have a X-dream cpu+heatsink+artic silver and at least 2 case fans, and with the side off my room mate gets a idle temp of 79-80C and I get a temp of 57-60C as reported in the bios, with the bios reporting 20C room temp. These temps are hot right? How can we cool them down?!

Also since the CPU wasn't auto-detected, what should the settings be in the bios, right now 166mhz at 12.5 multiper, which displays as a 2800+ but is there a way to get a the same speed but not so hot?

Any one offer any tips?

Are you sure you have the heatsinks properly seated?

Your roommate should not use his system until the heat problem is resolved. 80C is way too hot. the a7n8x will probably save the cpu from total meltdown, but something is definitely wrong.

What heatsink are you using?

we're both using the x-dreamer coolmaster heatsink and fans.

any other suggestions? still seems high

SocketA heatsinks have a step cut into one end of the base, which is there to provide clearance over the raised end of the CPU socket. It's essential to get the step oriented to match the raised end of the CPU socket, so double-check that pronto.

Also, some heatsinks can slide back & forth on their clips enough that they ride up on the raised end of the CPU socket even when they're on in the correct direction, so you also want to pull the heatsink as far to the other end of the clip as it will go, in order to keep that from happening.

Hope that helps! And yeah, what Hyperfocal said, don't run the system like that or you may be shoppin' for a new CPU soon. :Q

I'm pretty sure I got the heatsinks installed correctly.

What are some good temps that the cpu should be running at?

If I remember right, my A7N8X-Deluxe reads the temp of my AthlonXP 2500+ around 45C at idle, using an Alpha PAL8045 with a quiet Panaflo L1A 80mm fan (~24cfm).

If your X-Dreams are installed in the correct direction, the thumbrest end of the clip will be at the top end of the socket, by the top edge of the motherboard. You're not using

shims between the CPU and heatsink

, are you? If so, take 'em out and throw them away.

OMG that was it. it went from 56 to about 38... /sigh The only problem is that my power supply is too big, which is why i had the heatsink in the wrong direction in the first place...

i'm gonna try my room mates PC now..

edit* yup. his is at 46 now... thanks for the help

i feel like such a noob..

Ok, what is a good temp when running under a high load? What I mean is, it's running at 46 or so idle, but what is a good high end temp? Is about 60 ok Or is that still too hot?

Personally the highest I'll run a rig is 60 but that temp worries me. I'm paranoid if its over 58.

The case temp is still too high, it was running at 40C in the case, so it seems to me that it needs to get some more fresh air... it seems to be constant case temp + 20 = CPU temp..

The room temp is at about 60F, 4 case fans, front blowing in, side blowing out, and both rears are blowing out. We were thinking of messing round with the fans to see if we could get more cool air in, but is switching the side fan a good idea? Also the PC is in a corner, which doesn't help much.. :(

Switch the side fan... try it as an intake. The 'corner' is o.k., just give it a little breathing room.

Haha, i'm back again.

Well I got mine running at 45C idle, and i haven't seen it go above 55C. However my roomate's idles at about 50 and is at 60-62 when it's running how. However we moved it out of the corner it the temps dropped about 3-4 C so it's running at 58-59 C. I know these temps are high, but are they too high? Should we be looking for even more ways to cool his system down? One thing I did notice, he has 2 exhaust fans (actually 3 but the side of his case is off) and 1 intake. The intake is in the front of the case, but the case has no vents in the front to let any air in. so basically i'm thinking that the fan really isn't helping much.

It was actually pretty funny, we had the case lying on the groud the mazx temps were like 55-56, then we setup it upright sorta next to the wall (about 5 inches away) and it jumped up to 58-59, then 60-62.

Anyway any one have any more suggestions to get some more air flow? We're going to be messing with the placement of the PC later today. See if we can get it out of the corner. It is stable though =D

Hey, you guys aren't lanning in counter-strike are you? naughty, naughty.

So, when it was on it's side was the side of the case off? When it was standing up, was it on?

You did change the fan on the side of the case to blow air into it, yes? If you haven't, do it...
