Help me convince my friend to get a 9700PRO instead of a Geforce4ti4600

Hi..my new friend is building a rig...

err, my friend is building a new rig (LOL swap of a simple word changes everything)

now he is probably going the p42.6C and some springdale mobo out there

But he said he wants a G4ti4600....I told him to get a 9700Pro but he will not agree.

He said it was a "I prefer Pepsi, you prefer Coke" type of deal...

What should I do? I don't want him to get screwed over at all but he says he is loyal.

I don't think he'll get "screwed over". I mean, GF4s are cheaper than 9700 Pros. Maybe he's heard bad things about ATI's support? Maybe he has stock in Nvidia 😉

Do you have the 9700Pro? Because if you do, and it is faster let him get the slower card and then you can just have the satisfaction of knowing yours is better.

It isn't a Pepsi vs. Coke thing, because hardware is about performance and not difference in taste buds. The 9700 Pro clearly is a faster video card than the Ti4600. If he wants to be stupid, that's his choice.

being an idiot is a lifestyle for some people 😀

seriously, i ALWAYS buy the best video card - irrespective of the company! i cant understand why someone would put a vague concept of loyalty to a particular brand over their own benefit 😕

The 5600FX is equal to a 4600? Huh? Shouldn't it be more powerful...not just a G4 with DX9?

Anyway, while scouring the net (was on Tom's) I found this while looking for reviews:

However, it gave NVIDIA the chance to try and spoil ATi's efforts prior to the launch. Journalists were told that NVIDIA is less than impressed by Radeon 9000 as well as Radeon 9700 and that they don't believe ATi is going to sell a lot of either product. I leave it up to you to decide if you consider these words meaningful or simply sour grapes. It remains a fact that this time, NVIDIA will have to accept ATi's leadership for quite a bit longer than just a few weeks.

My my...

Agreed, i always buy what is the best out there (or that my budget will allow) and couldnt really care about any brands.
If nvidia comes out with something special i woul dhave no problems going that way. sticking with the drink analogies....
its really like comparing Coke with say some generic store brand cola... 🙂

The 4600 can beat the 5600 old version with AA disabled. Haven't found any benches with the new version with a comparison to the 4600.
UT2003 4xAA This one compares it to a 4800 but the 4600 should score around the same.

I am planning on upgrading from Ti500 to 9700Pro as soon as the price point is right. There's no comparison between the 4600 and the 9700Pro.

What's the price difference?

I can get a Ti4800SE for around than half the price of an R9700 Pro, so if he's looking to save a couple of bucks and can get a good deal on a 4600, why not?
If he wants good performance though, showing him some benchies should be enough.

Or he could just go for an FX5900 🙂

I have been buying nVidia cards since the Riva 128 chip came out (I did once have an Intel i740 card though) - never an ATi card though, until recently. I upgraded my Ti4200 to a 9700 Pro. The main thing I miss now is Rivatuner. It was an excellent tweaker for nVidia cards; it just has no match in the ATi arena. But that's no one's fault really; just is that way I guess.
There are tweakers out there for ATi cards, and they do a good job (I just like Rivatuner's interface). But the 9700 Pro is a good leap above the Geforce4 Ti line. I am able to run games at higher resolutions, with better antialiasing and anisotropic filtering than before; example is Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I could run it at 800x600@32-bit, Quincunx FSAA, with maybe level 2 anisotropic and get framerates around 35. Now I'm at 1024x768@32-bit, 4xFSAA, level 4 filtering, and get over 50fps.

he probably is just going to spend less now, then he will buy something that will crush your radeon in a few months for half the price.

I think the Ti4600 or Ti4800se are both solid video cards and would be a little less expensive than the ATI 9700pro. Sure, the 9700pro is a superior card, but the P4 3.0GHz processor is better than the 2.6GHz, too....

I read somewhere that RivaTuner actually works with the 9700 Pro as well. I haven't tried it though, I'm using Rage3dTweak w/ my AIW 9700 Pro.

No...that is the thing...We just both graduated from High School and he is going "all out" though not all out enough to get a 256meg9800pro.

And who said I 9700PRO 😉 Go Geforce4mx420 (suprisignly I can play UT2k3 at full detail in 800*600 and its smooth even when the action is crazy)

Also he thinks that ATI's drivers are still unstable. I don't have a Radeon and my brother has a 9000pro but he is still using the drivers from his saphirre CD he got last November but since he doesn't do heavy gaming and it runs fine he doesn't update it...

How are ATI drivers when compared to Nvidias? Seriously...I told him that ATI has made great leaps and bounds but he says , "Good for ATI - they are still way below the level of Nvidia"

Ugh....

Will the G4ti4600 be able to push most games at full detail next year because that is his main arguement. I say it won't and he says he should be able to blast it (he games mainly in 1024*768 and 1280*1204) and that AA and AF isn't important at all.

I've compiled the lists of Benchies but he just doesn't agree with the idea that AA and AF filtering is important and to be honest even though I've seen image comparisons I've tried enabling it on my G4mx and I don't see much of a difference

EDIT:

When he builds a PC...that is it. He doesn't contiously upgrade like many of us on AT. He still uses his 1800+ Palomino + 512megs of pc2100 ram and G4mx420 on some kt266

Tell him you hope 1000 camels rought on his lawn if he's gonna buy the slow TI4600.

The 9500 PRO is almost head to head with the TI4600 and with AA/FSAA on there's no competition, the 9500 PRO is faster.

when i said "your" i was using it like saying "your" team is going to loose at football. like when i said "your" i mean who you are rooting for

Here's my Video forum thread asking about 9700/9800 gaming - my happy thread

As I say in the thread, if your friend wants to run Doom3 at 1024x768 he probably wants to get the 9800 pro (128 MB not 256). Anything less and you'll probably have to live with 800x600 or lower than the Medium Quality setting.
