I'm considering a new PCI-E card with either a x700Pro ATI chipset or GeForce 6600 chipset. For various reasons (price, availability, performance, etc.) these are the two chipsets on focusing on. Any thoughts on which card?

Use: Gaming - although nothing too 3d intensive. 2D graphics, web, and office.
Other Hardware: Athlon64 3500+ and Asus A8N-VM

Thanks all.

If you are really strapped on $$ and have no money whatsoever to spare, go with the 6600GT.

Since both of your picks are in the $100 range, I say get neither and get an X800GTO with GDDR3 (not a GTO^2 that can unlock, those are $150+). It costs a bit more than an X700PRO, but has 4 more pixel pipes , higher clocks off the bat, and will likely OC better. This is my advice to you if you have a bit of money to spare.

If you have $174 to spare, I highly recommend the eVGA 7600GT. It is about 2X faster than a 6600GT (READ: Faster than X850XT) and draws less power.

6600GT>X700Pro>6600

If you are gonna spend close to $100, forget the 6600GT. Get the X800 128MB or a plain 6800. Newegg has both at a good price. The 6800 has 256-bit 256MB for $99 after rebate.
Hard to beat that.

i thought the base 6800 had 128-bit. well the asus does but all the others are listed as 256-bit. damn that evga 6800 for $99 is sweet.
