PII X2 550 beats e7500 in gaming overall.

Three of four benchmarks go to the AMD chip. And that's versus the e7500 which is faster than the e7400 you're considering. So if prices are equal I'd take the PII X2 over the e7400.

but wat about the 740g mobo. is it enough to extract the best out of x2 550 considering that it has got just the ddr2 support. and also will i be able to moderatley overclock my cpu on a 740g.

i am looking at asus 740 mobo.

There's about 1% real world difference between DDR2 and DDR3. Your call.

EDIT: Plus - I thought you mentioned above you were planning to reuse your DDR2-800 memory? That makes the decision rather easy for you.
