Hi,

I have a SpeedStream 2624 802.11b router in the basement. There are 3 computer on the second floor using the internet connection.

2 computer are able to get a 30-50% signal strength from the router and another one can only get a 0-20% signal strength.

The problem is that internet is slow on all computer (sometime it shuts on and off) and almost not working on the computer receiving the signal at 0-20%.

My question is, does the low and variable signal strength from my router is the one responsible for these problems?

What do you suggest me to do? Buy a new router? Maybe a 802.11g is better (all the adapter on my PCs are 802.11b/g, so no problem in switching directly to 802.11g)?i If so, can you please tell me which one will be the best in this case (I will need a router offering a long range and constant signal)?

Or, in your opinion, the signal is not responsible for the low speed internet and I should just buy a new adapter for the computer getting a low signal and live with it?

Or do you suggest me to buy a signal booster (antenna) for the router? If so, what kind of antenna will work on my router?

Please help and thanks in advance!

Quite subjective.

I've heard to avoid d-link, same person liked linksys, my first router ever was a linksys and I suffered a rare but debilitating problem with it. My second router was a netgear RT315, beautiful router, never gave me a problem, my third was a Netgear WRT624 (something like that), dropped connection 6-10x/day. I just got a buffalo but haven't had time to set it up.

It's gonna depend of what a user experiences. The other option is to compare the good and bad reviews and the helpful reviews on newegg. See what a lot of people are experiencing.

There is No D-Link good, Linksys better, Netgear sux, etc.

Each of the Brands has fair models, good models, and many models that Sux Big Time.

Currently preN should be avoided like the "Bubonic Plaque", and the best "Bang for the Buck" in 802.11b/g is the Router that I point to.

Disclaimer, I do not sell computer Hardware. I have no connection with any Brand that manufactures Network Devices of any kind, my comments are based as a reference to hardware that I buy with my own money.
