Please bear with me and my long post... :)
Currently i have a soyo platinum sy-kt333 with a 2100+ (not oc'd, too warm)
My system runs quiet, but warm (50c idle, 56c full load, chasis is 42c...all temps are approx 9c lower in the winter) at stock speeds. Possible causes may be the 4 7200rpm hard drives and 3 optical drives i have in the case :/ ....
most likely upgrading to an asus a7n8x motherboard....

1) Do i get a barton 2500+ or a 2600+ cpu? (for gaming mostly...so which one would be best? does the 512k cache help out that much? also, which one of them runs hotter?)

2) I have 2x256mb pc2700 crucial now... would they hold out at cas2 timings on the asus board or am I better off selling it and getting some corsair or kingston ram? And how much of a difference will it be between cas2.5 and cas2? I have tried looking at differences on my current setup...but even though benchies show slight differences, they are hardly noticeable in games.

3) If I do go for the a7n8x, I will be sticking my dvd-r, dvd-rom, and cd-rom on the two ata ports, meaning I'll have to stick an ata controller for my 4 ATA HDDs. Does anyone know approx. how long it takes the controller to detect the drives during bootup? I only ask because the highpoint controller on my soyo board takes ~10s, and i think this is way too long. Also, would the HD access times / transfer rates be better on the onboard ports or thru the maxtor ata133 controller?

Thanks.

1) get a 2500+ or 1700+ if you are gonna OC, 2600+ if not ocing
2) i dont think the crucial will run at cas2 but i wouldnt invest more money in ram esp since prices are goin up. i would stick with cas2.5
3) i dont have much experiance with a7n8x but my intel gigabyte board takes about 8 seconds as well. i'm willing to wager it is about the same as the a7n8x. but why not use the SATA ports?

i recommend an 8rda+ and a 2100+. It wont cost a lot at all and the 2100+ get pretty high. I ordered from googlegear.com and run my 2100+ with sk-7 at 11.5x200 24/7

Get one of those Frys ECS board/1800+ combo deals for ~$59.99

Get a Shuttle AN35N Ultra board for ~$65.00

Get a thermalright SK7 HS and fan for ~$20

Sell the ECS board that you get from Frys for ~$35

NET TOTAL: 60 + 65 + 20 - 30 = $110 + tax and you get a nice overclocking setup.

I am currently running my 1800+ (from frys) on this shuttle board @ 11.5 x 200 @ 1.65v - ROCK STABLE - using Thermalright SLK900U HS.
I can do 2.40Ghz @ 1.80v - have to do more testing on this config.
