So i have the task of adding some memory to a computer. Specs on the computer can be found here

Basically, it's a PII riding on an Intel 440BX PIIX4e board with three DIMM slots. It says that each slot supports up to a 128MB stick of non-ECC or up to a 256MB stick of ECC. What I want to do is populate 2 slots with 256MB ECC sticks and leave the third one blank. So I head over to Crucial to find what I need. I look up PC133 and look at the choices for 256MB sticks and there are six different sticks. Two of these choices I can eliminate because they are non-ECC. Of the four choices available now, I can eliminate two because they are CL2 variants of the same stick, which I don't need. So now my two choices are:

SDRAM, PC133 ? CL=3 ? Unbuffered ? ECC ? 7.5ns ? 3.3V ? 32Meg x 72

or

SDRAM, PC133 ? CL=3 ? Registered ? ECC ? 7.5ns ? 3.3V ? 32Meg x 72

The only difference between the two being that one is "Registered" and the other is "Unbuffered". What are the differences between these two, and more importantly, which one of them do I want to buy to run in the Intel 440BX PIIX4e board?

Thank you for your help. :)

So I guess I need Unbuffered then. What is the difference between it and Registered?

I want to get PC133 because it's the same price as PC100 and could be reused if they want to move up to a 133fsb chip.

Thanks.

possibly by then ..the mobo upgrade would be DDR..and that board you reference above is only rated for 100fsb procs ..unless you going with a Powerleap setup..either or on the memory..just the 440 board I had dealt with was not happy with pc133 memory(Crucial 128MB cl2 unbuffered..works fine in a Via 694 and an ECS K75SA ))..was able to mix/match ECC unbuffered Crucial pc100 128MB with a NEC pc100 unbuffered 128MB..no issues..as always YMMV
