Help me choose graphics card quick!!!

x800 XT w/ Doom 3 = $530

GeForce 6800 GT/ Doom 3 = $400

I was thinking of spending the difference to upgrade my powersuppy and overclock the 6800 to Ultra speeeds. Do I even need to upgrade the power suppy?

I am running a 380 Watt Power Suppy

1g ram
P4 2.4C
 
Bump, do I need two seperate power wires coming from the PSU. Or can I use just one of the "chains" that each have two connectors
 
get the 6800.

what kind of psu is it? If its a good brand name psu you dont need to upgrade it.

 
6800 GT hands down IMO. I like ATI, but they are not the best bang for the buck at the high end right now.
 
Got a Sonata and a 6800GT, no problems. All this "upgrade your powersupply" talk that went around a while ago is a bit overrated. They did some tests and even with an 6800 ultra and flash system the power drain was still only in the low 200's. The sonata psu is rated at 380W, but I read somewhere if you stress it can manage 450W before the volts start to drop. For a gt you don't need 2 seperate lines. Even if you did you could still use the same one plugged in twice as the Sonata powersupply guarantees something silly like 330W on a single line (that's what the "truepower" branding means I think).

The 400.00 package seems to be the best deal. 6800GT will also run circles around the X800XT in Doom3.
X800XT is pretty much faster than the 6800GT in most other games, but not 130.00 faster IMHO.

 
get a gainward golden sample 6800 GT and new PS. the gainward is a bit pricey but warrantied to ultra speeds so you can get a ultra (OCed GT as fast as an XT) and a new PS for less than an XT or Ultra
 
GT. Your PSU should be fine.

One thing about the new nVidia cards and power is that you want to be sure to supply your GT with power from a dedicated line from your PSU. I suggest you don't use a Y-cable, extension, or share the power line going to the video card with anything else. Myself and others have had issues with that. Once I gave my GT a direct, unshared power line straight from thr PSU it's been a great card.

Not necessary. Like I said above, it's an Antec truepower supply - you could plug every component you have into one line and it should still work fine.
 
You're power supply is fine for a GeForce 6800 GT. It's the Ultra version that requires a 480w power-supply. Personally, even though I'm partial to ATI (see signature), I'd go with the GeForce 6800 GT and overclock it to Ultra levels like evertone else is doing. Just my 2 cents.🙂
