help me choose an 1156 hs?

Got a 20% off coupon from newegg burning a hole in my pocket. Using the stock cooler for my i5-760 right now and happy with idle @30C and load 40C, but I'd like to get a decent hs while I've got the coupon. Recommendations for top 2-3 choices?

Gracias.

Cool Master Hper 212 + seems over priced compared to Amazon unless they have gone up too. Xigmatek Gaia is fair equivalent at $30 shipped -your6
(Scythe?)Dark Knight is $50 -10 - ($20 rebate)
Scythe 2100 is Mugen REV B $42 -$8.40
Both Zalman 9900 I believe has good revies

I spent a bit more for the HSF for my i5-760. I went with a Noctua NH-U12P SE2. I couldn't be happier. My idle temps stay around 30, and so far, the hottest I've seen with the Intel Burn Test on maximum is 68-69.
The few games I own don't raise the CPU temp into the 40's.

Will the Hyper 212+ do a good job? Probably. I don't care much for the "direct heatpipe" base on many of the coolers.

"20% off" and you're looking at heatsinks? 😵
Heatsinks are cheap enough, put that 20% discount to better use with higher $$ items.

Maybe it is only good for CPU coolers? I got a Newegg coupon like that recently.

Raswan, how do you feel about rebates? How about noise? Any upgrade plans that might involve a different socket? Is your case wide enough for a tall cooler? What is your ultimate budget for this upgrade?

ZALMAN CNPS5X
92mm fan with 3 heatpipes and universal mounting
$30 -$6 coupon -$15 rebate with free shipping = $9

Corsair A50
120mm fan with 3 heatpipes and universal Intel-only mounting
$34 -$7 coupon -$15 rebate with free shipping = $12 (maybe a bit more, I rounded)

Corsair A70
DUAL 120mm fans with 4 heatpipes and universal mounting
$46 -$9 coupon -$15 rebate with free shipping = $22 (maybe a bit more, I rounded)

Yep, only good for coolers. I'm not a fan of rebates, but I'll do em. Liking the look of that A70 out of those three you linked. Putting it into an Antec Nine Hundred Two, so there's plenty of room. And I just upgraded, so no plans on switching to SB for awhile. I'm coming from a Tuniq 120 that I sold with my old computer, so I'm not averse to spending a little cash for a solid cooler.

I'm looking mostly for silent, since the stock intel one really cranks it under load. The A70 or that Noctua mentioned by Boomer look to be the quietest, both with solid airflow.

How 'bout the 212+? It's so friggen cheap and is an excellent performer

Yeah, it gets great reviews, and no reason not to trust it in particular. It's on the list along with Boomer's Noctua and Zap's Corsair A70.

I realize it places a distant second to performance, but is there anything pie-in-the-sky out there that looks badass but performs well? Something that I won't be able to justify fiscally but won't be able to control myself?

Xigmatek Thor's Hammer?
$69.99 - $14 coupon - $25 rebate with free shipping = $30.99

"What do you use for a CPU cooler"

"Thor's Hammer!"

If that isn't badass...

What do you consider "looks badass"? Imo the 212+ and others like it looks badass. I think you should look around at newegg and find what you think looks badass and then ask about that cooler.

Haha! Thor's Hammer. Good stuff.

Also checking out the Noctua NH-D14 for pure badassery, and the ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R, because it's got a pretty red LED, and lastly the ZALMAN CNPS11X--though reviews look mixed here.

Weez--the 212 does not look badass.

Those are badass.

Yeah, that SpinQ is pretty badass looking too. I had one but just sold it.

Still, Thor's Hammer. C'mon! Seriously! It has SEVEN heatpipes!

😛

From now on, if anyone asks, that is what I shall call my penis.

For the name alone, it's almost worth it, but I notice it's for 775s and 1366s only. 🙁

You need to update your penis. 😛

Look in Newegg's product name line, right above the "in stock" and price.
XIGMATEK Thor's hammer HDT-S126384 CPU Cooler REV.W with ACK-I5363 120mm Long Life Bearing CPU Cooler I7 i5 775 1155 and AMD compatible

Look up ACK-I5363 and you find this universal Intel backplate with screws.

I purchased a Thor's Hammer and just got it day before yesterday (Friday). I opened up the package right now after reading your post and indeed it comes with a backplate with three sets of mounting holes, for all Intel LGA sockets. In fact, the retail packaging was even updated to say "Core i5."

So, being that I actually own one, I think I've earned the right to the "Thor's Hammer" name. 😀
