Help me choose a SCSI SCA hard drive

Well, I've got the box, the cpus and the memory. Now
I need to get a SCA SCSI hard drive to complete my
SC450NX server.

Now I need to get a SCSI SCA drive for the hot swap
bay and power the thing up! :)

How about some recommendations for a SCSI SCA drive?
Price is important here...$1000 hard drives are cool,
but not what I want to pay. Everyone (IBM, Quantum, WD,
Seagate, etc.) seems to have both 10K and 7200rpm lines
(some have 15K lines, too, but mostly pricey). Minimum
size would be 9Gb, but 18Gb (or 36Gb) would seem a better
way to go unless there's a 9Gb drive that's a steal...

Suggestions? Do 10K drives run a LOT hotter than 7200?
Are they considerably noisier (probably not gonna make
much difference with the roar of the 11 fans in the chassis
to drown them out!)

Oh, and drive should fit in a standard 1" high x 3.5" wide
slot...Since it's going into a drive bay, I could waste a second
slot and use a half-height drive, but why go that way unless
there's some compelling reason...

Anyway, I'm new to the SCSI market. Which drives best
hit the "sweet spot" for price and performance?

Thanks much,

Kwad

I am not an expert in SCSI but as I can see on internet almost all SCSI HDD with similar specs are about the same price.....

So I would suggest you to select your HDD with these criteria :
cool
quiet
durable

I have here a Quantum ATLAS 10K 18.2Go 68 pin running well without cooling device (I will get one soon just in case).

Also I have a IBM 9.1Go 7200 RPM SCA that is running without cooling.

Of course, the Quantum is louder because of its 10K RPM. I would say that a Quantum Fireball SE or CR (IDE 5400 RPM) is also louder than the IBM....

I hope this can help.

You might want to have a look into the Quantum Altas V's. Their 7200RPM drives, but pretty damn fast, quiet, cool running, and fairly cheap. I have the 36GB model and it'd been great. Last time I checked, it retailed for $550USD.

Hypermicro.com has the best deals on SCSI hard drives generally, and they are excellent to deal with. Browse their hard drive section, they should have some SCA drives. I just checked and they have a nice deal on an 80-pin SCA Atlas 10K, $320. Looks like a good deal to me for 18 gigs considering its 10K RPM.

Buy a hard drive cooler for that sucker. Hypermicro sells some generic HD coolers cheap, should suffice.

I like the Ultrastars by IBM. The 36LZX 'Discovery' is their latest offering. 4.9ms access spec.

IBM 36LZX

Yes, Hypermicro rocks. Good prices, great service, never a problem. Sometimes they offer free 2-day FedEx if u mention certain sites (like overclockers.com maybe?).

The X15 is the current reigning fastest-drive-on-the-planet, and therefore deserves a hard look.

Fujitsu MAG3182 or IBM 36 something. Those are 10k drives. They're somewhat slower by couple % but much quieter & cooler. If fact the Fujitsu drive doesn't requires active cooling according to Storagereview. The IBM drive usually is the cheapest of all 10k drives.

Seagate 18XL are not that bad but not for the price you have to pay & it runs hot.

Atlas 10k is loud! The Atlas 10k II suppost to be much quieter but good luck finding one in stock.

Thanks all for the advice. I went with the IBM 36LZX 18Gb drive.
I bought it at Outpost.com...It was $355 shipped, but I had $50 of
"free" Flooz, so it came out to $305 shipped. I guess that's
not too bad for an 18Gb 10,000rpm drive...("Only" about 3X
what I've been paying per GB for 7200 IDE drives).

Again, thanks for the help and advice...
