I need to buy a PDA for work.

Price range somewhere around $400.

Would prefer PocketPC, ideally wireless.

Any recommendations?

Get an Axim with an 802.11b Compact Flash card. I think any other wireless PDA is going to cost start at $500...

Axims rule for the price. 249 right now, but they were 199 after rebate a few weeks ago. They can use compact flash and mmc/sd cards at same time, allowing for plenty of storage and add ons.

I would also like to hear from somebody who has used one of the Axims. I'm looking at the 300mhz model.

i have an axim, its great if you dont mind the size. its pretty hard to get compact flash and secure digital in a pda and stay thin. The screen is really nice and the battery life is pretty good. Bonus: Its great for playing NES roms.

I have very little experience with PDA's (especially Axim). How much can you really do with spreadsheets/word? Is it basically the same as on your PC or are there limitations (and to what degree)?

The only bad thing about hte axim is that you won't be getting one for a while since they are so far on backorder...:(

The toshiba e740 is nice, since they finally fixed the problem with the batter popping out...build in Wifi and a SD and CF expansion slot.

I like it, but just got a notebook & like it a lot more...

The wireless thing is cool for a while, but just gets painful, the screen's just too small.

For that price I'd look @ a Compaq 1910, or Toshiba e740 (if you absolutely have to have wireless)

Excel for pocket pc lacks the Solver and Goal Seek functions, which is something that would have kept me from buying one had I known that.

I got a Thinkpad T20 for $600 used off of ebay (384mb ram, p3 700, 12GB drive, DVD and Win2k). It's not all that heavy, lasts 2 hours plus on a charge (which is about half what my maestro will on a GOOD day). I like it a lot better and use it more than my pocket pc.

Otherwise, if you don't mind the bulkyness of an axim, I don't see why not get one of those, especially at your budge. A CF slot is a big plus for me

Ask NFS4 but I would get a ViewSonic or HP iPaq.

Dell Axim's are a good value but way to bulky and I don't think you can have a CF card and CF WiFi card in at the same time.

If you want wireless, that leaves out the iPAQ 1910 and Viewsonic V35.

That leaves the Toshiba e740 which has Wi-Fi built-in or the Dell Axim for which you can add a 802.11b CF card. Since the Axim has a better battery and screen and is cheaper, I'd say go for the Axim.

I just got the 400Mhz Axim. It isn't as bulky as people make it out to be. It's the same size as my Palm IIIxe.

I think it is fantastic. I've already got 2 of my friends to buy one. Though I got it for $275, this thing is really starting to add up in costs though. $110 for 256MB SD card, $60 for CF WiFi card, $300 for CF GPS system w/software, $30 screen protector, $15 travel charger, $70 car mount and charger, $60 headphones.

The Axim has pretty good battery time though. About 11-12 hours of use before needing a full recharge.

If you have any other questions, give me a PM.

Well, I'd say it is compared to my 1910:

Axim vs 1910

Well, it is bulky compared to the 1910 and the V35 but it isn't the pig people make it out to be.

On another note, Intel just announced a new line of Xscale CPUs today. They run at the same clock speeds but they have a new bus system which is double the old one. They should be significantly faster than the current Xscales. They are called the XPA250 C1 I believe. They should be out in a month or so so you may want to wait til then. The delays on Axims are about a month anyway.

Hehe. I found out how bulky the Axim is compared to the ipaq. I make paper PDA's using the given dimensions (see my boredom at work thread). The axim is gigantic compared to the ipaq.

HOWEVER, I don't need to carry the thing in my pocket, so I went with the Axim. I ordered it yesterday so I may get it in a few weeks...

But if you put an iPAQ in the CF sleeve in order to use the Wifi, it would be around the same size as an Axim right?
