Help me choose a MB....

Tired of the Bull

Golden Member
I want to purchase a new MB. (May purchase a P3 a little later??? If I need more horsepower for video capture stuff.)

Current Equipment:

ATI Radeon AIW
SB Live X-Gamer
PCI LAN and MODEM
CELERON II 566
512MB of Crucial 133 CAS2
Plextor 12X10X32 IDE
AFREEY 50X IDE CDROM
IBM 45GB ATA 100, 7200rpm
Western Digital 20GB, 5400rpm

I'm selling my BX-133 because I will never do RAID and it doesn't overclock my CEL566 and I would like to do this until a possible CPU upgrade later.

I have a few concerns:
AIW doesn't appear to like VIA chipsets?
Newer ABIT boards like the SA6R don't overclock CEL II very well?
I815E handles limited RAM?

Thoughts Opinions Recomendations....

In your question to the VIA chipsets, the AIW Radeon should work just fine.

The i815E chipset handles up to 512mb of ram. You probably are not going to need more than that do you?

If you want a good i815e mobo, I suggest you use an Asus CUSL-C.
The maximum memory an i815e can handle is 512MB.

If your doing DV stuff you may need more memory than that. Also if your considering a new motherboard this may be a good time to consider AMD, if you haven't already. you can get an MSI KT7 Pro 2A and a Duron 700 for $180 shipped from Mwave, and it will be much faster than your 566 even if you can get it to overclock to 900 something. And it will probably overclock quite nicely also.

I haven't heard of any problems with the Radeons and VIA chipsets. Got any links to where you heard this, or what your system was doing?

Edit - The KT7 Pro 2A will support 768 MB of memory. MSI is also very well known for thier stability and very reasonable prices.

Is there any major advantage/disadvantage to the boards with built on RAID (if you don't do use RAID)? I liked the the extra IDE channels because I could put each device on its own channel but does that really help the system in things like CD burning?

Also how high can the voltage on the CUSL2-C be tweaked for the CEL II? That's the major limitation on the ABIT boards recently?

If you go with mobos with RAID, you'll have to pay extra. However, it does give you a maximum of 8 IDE devices and RAID capability.

LordSandMan,

I read it on RAGE3D as well as on several news groups. The more recent posts seem to say that the newer drivers have cleared up most of the problems.

I will be converting Analog video to Digital via the AIW.

Will my RAM work with the Duron?
Will the Duron overclock?

The RAM will work fine on the Duron and you should be able to get it to atleast 900 if not 1000. I've got a 600@1000. As long as you have the latest drivers installed the VIA/AMD solution has been very stable. I don't think mine has locked up ever that it couldn't be traced back to a software problem or incompatability.

Depends on which processor you're gonna buy! Prices for both Intel & AMD are real sweet. Get the Asus CUSL2-C if you're going Intel.

Yes it does have the KT133A Chipset.

KT133 vs KT133A I don't think there is much difference except the KT133A is supposed to be 10% faster from what I've heard on the forums. I think it may have ATA100 built into the chipset as well.

The heatsink that came from mwave worked fine to get an 800 up to 1000 at 40C if I remember right.

I'll see if I can find some links for you in a couple of minutes.

Lords,

Thanks....

I've been reading until my head is starting to hurt. I still keep finding several posts dealing with VIA problems with IDE stuff especially CDRWs and with various ATI video products.

There also seems to be two versions of the KT133A out there, which seems odd.

Overclocking Guide @ Sharky

MSI Product info

KT133A on Anandtech

Also, I haven't used the MSI Pro2A yet, but will probably be ordering one in the near future, so I don't have any hands on experience with it. I do have a KT7 Raid based on the KT133 chipset and it has been great. I have heard of some issues with I believe the KT133A with a green line coming up on the screen and locking up. You should be able to find some threads on Anandtech forums if you do a search. Also on MSI's webpage it says the Pro 2A uses the KT133 Chipset. I think it is a typo, but can someone back me up on that. The Overclocking article on SharkyExtreme should also work fine for other speed Duron and tbird processors.

I recommend getting the K7T Turbo instead, it uses KT133A, and it has RAID as an option, basically just the same board as K7T Pro2A.
