Help me choose a laptop!

Both of those are fair machines, the HP is nice for the money, (if she's not that advanced of a user a 7200 rpm drive helps against startup bloat that you KNOW they will eventually encounter, lol), I just helped my ex pick one out and we decided to go with a Dell Studio M 1737 and she freaking loves it, I saved her old hard drive and got the spare parts from dell to put the 2nd drive in too 🙂

500-700?

get a thinkpad. i think the sl-500 starts at 500 and is 549 with a c2d processor. add a gig or 2 of ram for 15 - 25 dollars, respectively, from newegg and youre set for under 600 bucks. id take a new thinkpad over a recertified HP any day of the week. and with the thinkpad you can get a 14" or a 15.4" starting at the same price.

What would the laptop be used for?

I personally would also echo a Thinkpad, but depending on expected usage, a different series may fit better.
