I am looking for a device that can record from VHS to DVD and back, and record from a TV to Harddrive. I found plenty of VHS/DVD combo recorders, but I couldnt find a device that would have all the fetures I described above. Keep in mind, that I cannot spend more than $300 on this thing, so if it is impossible to find such device for the price, just tell me that right away. Oh and off course the device must be non PC based and external.

unless its not copy protected most cannot copy dvd to vhs. not that it would be worth doing anyways. what for anyways? just remember that recording onto single layer dvds isn't much space, especially since its done in real time. so the only way to get decent quality at constant bitrate is to have a very high one.2 hrs per disc. any less that it starts to look shady. and no it won't be "dvd" quality either due to source and lack of animorphic bleh blah. my guess is 300 is too low. might get u a recorder+vhs, but no harddrive.

Nah.. I dont want to copy protected DVDs. What ever gave you a reason for that assumption?
In fact the real reason behind all this is that my father wants to copy our family VHS tapes to DVDs to save space. He also thought it would be nice to record from TV. But he doesnt want to buy a TiVO.

Buy separate units. It bites if one side craps out and the other is working. Get a good VCR. Get a Good DVD player.

Combining units is asking for trouble.
