Help me choose a 17" monitor

Ok after some research and browsing at Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, Staples...I have narrowed my monitor search to about 3 monitors.

My earlier 17" monitor search thread

My computer and mouse are black...im planning on getting a black monitor and keyboard as well (although this is not a neccessity)

1. NEC FE700+ BLK - I can get this for about $130 @ Staples AR, PM, coupon
pros - looks good, crisp, decent monitor at a very good price, only $20 tied up in rebates, i know it supports 1152x864@77hz
cons - older model?

2. Compaq FS7550 BLK/SLVR - I can get this for about $150 @ Staples AR, PM, coupon
pros - high resolution support (1600x1200), high refresh rate at 1280x1024 (75hz), monitor seemed to be very clear
cons - overall the monitor did not seem to be very vibrant with color, $150 tied up in rebates, didn't look to be perfectly flat

3. Viewsonic A70f White - I can get this for about $160 @ Office Depot AR, coupon
pros - very nice picture, crisp and vibrant colors, perhaps the best of the three?
cons - slightly bright, most expensive

Which monitor is the best?
It will be used in a college dorm and should be good for text (writing papers), imaging, and dvd/tv playback...also, my favorite resolution setting is 1152x864 so it should be able to support that at 75hz+ (i think all of them do)

I have a NEC FE 700...

And from my experience....It's a GREAT looking monitor.... Much better color and text than Some monitors...

130.00 is a nice deal...

😀

Go for it...

I've been using this model at work for about a year. It's a very good (and clear) monitor without any noticeable geometry issues. Also, our office is mainly filled with these monitors and I can't see any visible flaws (e.g. - unclear picture, geometry issues) with any of them.

Good luck with your purchase.

Went to circuit city yesterday and got to check out the FE700+ for an extended amount of time. I did some tests with text in Word and some high res pictures @ 1152x864 @ 75hz. The FE700+ looks really sweet for text work and general use! It was also superb with high res pictures. The picture was sharp and clear...the colors were SLIGHTLY washed out compared to some of the higher end monitors, but all in all it looked very nice.

I was then able to borrow a sample dvd from one of the CC employeees and play it on the FE700+. The picture was very nice, although dark black was a little too light/greyish for my tastes. A little more tinkering with the controls would probably fix that.

One thing I noticed and had also heard in a user review on eopinions.com was that the NEC FE700+ has a light grey horizontal line about a quarter of the way down vertically from the top of the screen. According to the user review on eopinions.com the NEC tech support said that this was normal with flat screens (especially with a white background like Word files) and would take a little while getting used to. I looked around at other flat screens CRTs in circuit city and they didn't seem to experience this. Is this normal?

If it's AG, then you'll see the two feint lines on the top and on the bottom. I got used to them quick on my 700NF, and they don't bother me at all.. the only time I feel it being bothersome is when people point it out 😛

Yes it uses an apeture grill. The NEC FAQ page also covers the faint grey line question and explains it.

If you don't like the two lines/Aperture Grille tube type, you could consider
AS75F or MS77F - these are dot trio flat tube or invar shadow mask flat tube.

Yeah I saw both of those other monitors and I wasn't too impressed with them. I like the picture quality of the FE700+, i guess I'll just learn to live with it.

Well I opted for the NEC FE771 from Staples. It has the DiamondTron tube and is very compact in size in the rear. I will post my first experiences with it soon.
