Help me buy some tools for the RX-8

Turtle reminded me - zip ties. Get a medium (~6-8 inches) and a long length (12+ inches) of zip ties. Those saved my ass once when my front bumper got half-ripped off (GD super tall parking curb) and I didn't want to rip it the rest of the way off to stuff it in the back seat for the drive home.

that VW was new... and had a better track record then his RX8 which i think he bought used.

a VW might be known for their small germlins in the mk4 but not too many issues with the engine as long as its not oil sludging. the rx8 i know nothing off because the the rx7 guys i know hate the rx8. the rx8 drivers i know are mainly females and they like the way they look so i dont know any real world issues they have with them.

zip ties like duck tape are GREAT tools.

Well he's not had the RX8 for long. Give it time.

Yeah, true on the RX8 drivers. I've seen maybe 2 male drivers out of the dozens I've seen in the past few years?

+1 for duct tape. I used this once to tape up the bumper / wheel well liner after a deer hit. (The wheel well liner was dragging on the tire.) I had to drive ~5 miles to the next exit to buy some, though.

edit: I wonder how duct tape stands up to 120+ degrees F in cars. Gooey mess??

I'm pretty sure they make duct tape that's heat resistant.

Just remembered, it's called Speed Tape (they use em on aircraft).

Heh, so I ended up getting a AAA card. I decided against the booster battery since I don't have plans any longer for an audio system, but I do still want a nice jack. I have changed plenty of tires and I do have a spare so it might come in handy one day.

I'll probably get a cheap ratchet set, just in case. 🙂

Of course you have all that stuff in your car. You drive an 85 f-body! 😛

I carry a 55 piece tool set (~20 sockets, 1/4 ratchet, 3/8 ratchet, couple of screw drivers, Allen wrenches, etc.) that someone got me for Christmas years ago. Along with that, I have:

- 4D cell Maglite. It throws a lot of light and it doubles as a club if someone tries to attack me; positioned right next to the driver's seat
- 2AA cell Maglite + LED upgrade in the center console
- Crank-up flashlight in the trunk
- Jumper cables
- Duct Tape
- Small knife
- Small electronics tool set with needle nose pliers, wire cutters, etc.
- Crappy scissor jack included with spare
- A spare headlight / tail light bulb
- A couple of glow sticks (to use as "flares")
- Spare coat
- Umbrella
- Gloves

Most of the stuff is aimed at keeping me and a passenger safe if something goes wrong. If it's more than a flat tire or another simple repair, I won't be able to do it on the side of the road anyway. What little tools I carry are primarily for helping other people when I don't have time to stop home and grab proper equipment first.

The Mustang will include a slightly larger tool set (older car, less reliable, easier to get at stuff and fix), most of the same stuff, plus a gallon of water, quart of oil, and maybe a jump pack.

Flashlight is a good one, as is a couple trash bags. They can be used as a mat, a poncho, or as bags.

My car:
~Ratcheting screwdriver set
~Trash bag
~Shop towel roll
~Folding chair (because!)
~Blanket because I drive around with the top off when it's really cold

My truck:
~Trash bag
~Paper towels
~Targets (because I always forget them at the range)
~Folding chair (because!)
~Blanket because the rear seats fold down, bow-chicca-bow-bow
~First aid kit
