What kind of display do you recommend? XGA, UXGA, I have no idea what the differences are.

I want a 15" screen, 40 gig hdd, and a DVD rom... I don't relaly care about anything else. Anyone want to help me find a notebook with those specs in the $1400 range? :) thanks... or just point me in the right direction. heh.

EDIT: Oh yeah, what brand do you recommend?

SXGA+ Is what I reccomend. 1400x1050. XGA is 1028x768, and UXGA is 1600x1400...which is insane on a 15" LCD :). Thats just my personal feelings

You're probably not going to find too many notebooks with thouse features at that price, espically if you go UXGA. Sorry.

I'd reccomend Dell and Toshiba. I'd tend to stay away from Sony though. Too many of my friends have had sony notebooks that have fallen apart on them.

For a 15" screen, SXGA (higher resolution than XGA's 1024x768).

Go to Dell!

And start in Hot Deals for the "how to" at the lowest price. $1400 should easily cover an Inspiron 4100 with what you need (dont forget a separate videocard - an ATI Radeon Mobility - if you are a gamer).

You can also find some good deals on Toshibas. Mine lasted me about 8 months so far. Been going strong.

Also, I'm assuming I should get a P III-Mobile or P4 -Mobile... is there a big difference between, say, the P3-M 1Ghz, and P4-M 1.4Ghz? Those are the range of processors I am looking at....

I think the better CPU is the Athlon 4 or the Mobile Duron. Compaq, Sony, and HP all have laptops with a Athlon and/or Duron.

But thats just me :)

I've always liked the Mead notebooks. They seem to be nice. I like the canvas coverings, such a nice texture and a joy to decorate. Junior High and High School were such fun times. I recommend a MEAD... ;)

Oh, my bad, you're looking for a laptop!

I hate it when people say notebooks, laptops forever!

I think you're gonna be hard pressed for the specs you're lookin for in that price range. I know a friend at work just picked up a Toshiba P3 1.1 w/ 256 meg ram, 30 gig hd, 14.1 Active XGA, dvd-rom/cdrw, etc for about $1700 b4 taxes. For my money, IBM and Toshiba are the way to go. I have a 6 year old Thinkpad that has never given me a problem and friends have had similar experiences with Toshibas.
