Im going to start a new job in a few days, and the reason im gettin this job is so I can buy myself a new car. Im pretty much mechanically challenged, so I dont really know what kind of car I should get. I like sedans the most, then coupes. No trucks or SUVs. The price limit is somewhere around 15k. Horsepower, and 0-60 will influence my decision the most. Im leaning towards the 2000 Nissan Maxima. Seems like an all around good car. Which car do you think I should get?

Well, id really like a new car. But the types of cars i like cost more than 15k new, so ill have to settle for a 2000...or the lowest a 1999, simply cause im poor =(
The reason I say maxima is mainly cause those 222 horses can come in handy when I get a lil fast n furious.

I would say stick with the 2000 Nissan Maxima, if you can find a pre-owned one for $15,000

Otherwise here's a great thread with 72 posts If you had $15,000 to buy a new car.

amdforlife,
What you`re asking is like asking "What`s the best flavor ice cream?" First off, how long do you plan to keep this car? If you are looking to zip around for a couple of years, buy an older (94-98) sedan and add some goodies with the money you save. If you plan on keeping the car for 5 years or more, then a new 2000 might work for you.
There are just too many things to weigh when making this decision:
1) Insurance! Saving a few bucks at the dealer might end up costing in the long run. Check with your agent or Internet about what the cars you like will cost you in insurance. Spending a little more at the dealer for a different brand or model can actually save you money in the long run. Also remember with a loan, you will have to carry full coverage.
2) In for the long haul? Warranty. I don`t know Rossman but both my Hyundai`s (one present, one past) were very good to start with. 10 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty made them great. Plus don`t buy extended warranty, ripoff.
3) Upgrades, add-ons. If you plan to customize your car, look for aftermarket parts availability now. Dodge Neon seems to have huge aftermarket support.
4) Who the heck is selling a 2000 Maxima for 15k?
Good luck.

As an owner of a 2000 Maxima SE, it is an excellent car. The engine is smooth as silk. I would be more than willing to sell it so I can pick up a new 2002 Maxima when they come out with the 3.5L 260 HP engine, but of course, my better half keeps reminding me it's her turn for a new vehicle...

i plan on keeping the car for as long as im paying for it, 4-5 years. Insurance is an EXTREMELY HEAVY factor. Paying for insurance when you're a male teen isnt too cool. Thats why im looking at maximas instead of celica's or something. I figure insurance will be a little easier w/ the sedan. If i do end up buying the maxima, ill shell out more cash. But I figure in august, I can buy a maxima for 15k if i put 10k down. Maybe its just a hope. Warranty isnt that big of an issue, cause ill get rid of the car in about 4-5 years, and i know most warranties last up to about that time. As far as upgrades go, I could cough up some doe for rims and a system, but thats about all i really care for.

being a male teen, you're gonna be screwed no matter what you get, and there probably won't be any difference in a Maxima or Celica/Impreza

edit: check out a Jetta or Golf w/ the VR6, too

Yeah I hear what you're sayin. I wonder if I buy the car in my moms name, then insure the car under her name...I could save a bunch of money.

Save yourself some dough!
Keeping the car just for the life of the loan is expensive. As many others have said here, buy something three or four years old. Save on the initial cost of the car, the biggest hit in depreciation is already absorbed by the person you buy from and you`ll save on insurance as well.
With the money you save, you can upgrade the car to your liking.

Try toyota corollas! Its not that slick but not cheap-looking also. Based on experience and what other people say, its not too much of a headache plus higher resale value (in my opinion). Some cars become so expensive only if the buyer puts a lot of features in the car, unless of course you buy those luxury ones.

Thats a very good idea. Which cars would you reccommend from the 1998 era?

Now you`re asking the ice cream question again. What`s cool to me is probably not cool to you. Again, good luck.

Toyota Camry V6. Smooth and powerful enough, just not as quick as a Maxima. Should be reasonable insurance. The Corolla might be OK with insurance and an Altima might be pretty good too. The Altima handles well, and with 150-155 HP, is certainly no slouch when you really "need to drive." The 2000 Altima has a number of improvements over the 1999, even though it looks the same. Lots of 2000 Altimas even have a strut tower brace and 16 inch rims from the factory. Hondas are more expensive to insure. Anyone who drives a lot can guess why.

Heh, I know how ya feel amdforlife. I just got a Black 2002 Scooby Impreza 2.5RS for 20k, and that comes out to $378 a month for 60 months, and insurance under my dads name (as primary driver) is like $150, but I'll probably be paying my parents $500 a month for the car, which is like nothing.

I suggest test driving one, it's better then a honda for sure.

Oh yea, my uncle suggested that I go with new, since it's just better that way, and just trade it in every 3 years or so when the value drops just enough and get a new car.
