Help me build my next computer.

Hi everyone,

I think my current rig is still pretty good, but it's a few years old now and I'm starting to think about the next system. 64 bit is clearly the future, but I'm not too up to speed on the options out there (and I've always been an Intel guy). It does seem that AMD is leading the two companies in terms of their 64 bit presence.

Current specs:

3.0ghz Intel 800fsb
Dell Mobo
2x512mb Samsung Ram
256mb ATI 9800xt
2x120mb Seagate Barracuda SATA in Raid 0
Promise Raid Controller

So, should I wait until Jan/Feb 2007 for Windows Vista and buy a new system then, or are there new technologies ready to go now that won't be too stale-dated by next year? Would probably spend 2-3K or so.

What is everyone else doing when it comes to the new 64 bit generation. Wait and see or is it time to make the switch?

If you can wait then Conroe should ship around july, the first glimpses of it look stunning. I doubt i'm going to be hopping straight over to vista, by then OSX might have made it over to the PC market, which would be nice

Also you might be able to find a HDCP compliant graphics card then (i doubt it but maybe).

Of course it's also true that no matter when you upgrade there will always be a better CPU and videocard around the corner...

of course...but this isn't a bump in ghz, its truly next gen which is what I was looking for

if you want next gen, then i would wait for june/july for intels' conroe to come out. the performance is pretty amazing for intel considering how much the netburst architecture was supposed to scale upwards around 8Ghz or something.

by then...im sure ati and nvidia will have hdcp compliant cards and more monitors will support hdcp as well. hopefully.

If its doing what you need it to do right now then I would hold off. but if your demands now are greater than what your system can handle then upgrade and then sell in the fall.

from what the preliminary benchmarks have shown, it beats out the FX60 by 20% or more. and that is the middle of the range conroe...2.66Ghz. i think the clocks go all the way up to 3Ghz+. not sure though.
