I've been meaning to upgrade for a while, and now it looks like it's finally time. I had an 2 HDs go bad, and I'm done fighting with these old components, so I'd like to buy something know.

The parts that I need are:
CPU (only looking for AMD, no Intel)
Mobo
Video Board (I currently have a Radeon 9700pro, but I'm looking to upgrade that too)
Power Supply

I already have a gig of 2700DDR and a DVD-R drive, and I'm going to get the Antec Super Lanboy case. Budget-wise, I'm thinking like 600-700 max. I'd really like to go lower than that if possible. This will primarily be used for working and gaming. It doesn't have the be the fastest thing around, but I'm looking for something that will sustain me for a good long while.

TIA!

ABIT NF7-S $87
AMD ATHLON XP 2500+ (OR MOBILE) $93
MSI RADEON 9800 PRO $194
ANTEC 350W+ PSU $60
SEAGATE HD

If u get Athlon 64, I THINK the pc2700 will hold you back.

Unless ur willing to replace the RAM with 3200 and get A64 then I guess this is alright.

Okay, how about replacing the RAM? I'm looking to get something high-end enough to not force me to upgrade in 6 months (video board notwithstanding).

might as well just get a 6800 or X800, to support future applications and games...

I would do this:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Retail Processor - $160.00
Epox 8KDAJ nForce3 250Gb Motherboard - $99.00
1GB Kingmax PC 3200 DDR RAM - $146.00
Thermaltake 480W Xaser Edition Black PSU - $55.00
Leadtek Geforce 6800 128MB Video Card - $282.00

Total: $742.00

That gives you the best all around upgrade, you shouldn't need to upgrade for a good while with that system.

You should also be able to sell your gig of PC2700 for $120 or so, and you can take that off the price of the upgrade.

That looks like a damn good setup, jdogg...where did you get those prices from?

I may up my budget a bit and swap in a 6800GT.

Thanks!

Okay, I ended up going with jdogg's setup, plus the Antec Super Lanboy case. Total cost with shipping and tax was 961.71. A tad on the pricey side, but with the scrap that I'm going to sell I should end up paying about $700. Pretty damn good machine for the price, IMO.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

Glad to see you got everything. I am going with almost the same setup, along with the Antec case. Where did you get it from? eBuyer.com has it for 75.96 shipped just to let you know. Thats quite a bit cheaper than Newegg, especially when shipping is involved.

Have fun with the new setup!

Damn, I wish I had known that before I ordered from Newegg...but 17 dollars kind of gets lost in 950+, so not that big of a deal.

I'm sure we'll both have a great time with that setup, it should make for a hell of a system! :)
