Hello, in October I will be building a computer for a friend. He'll use it use for some work stuff (MS Office, any version), Probably use Win98SE or ME...

Needs a 15GB or so HD, a cheap 3 piece speaker system (probably that Altec Lansing Cube or whatever the heck it is), a slower reliable CD-R/W (hes not into mp3's, just burns whole cds when hes not around, and sometimes mixes), he's not much into 3d games, hell surf the internet, etc.

I think I'll go with an nForce 220 when they come out... decent enough graphics if he decides to play games, onboard sound, does it have an onboard modem?

Budget is 600-650, not including Monitor, which I have take care of. Cheaper is appreciated, but I don't want something thats going to conk out. Will probably go AMD T-Bird 1Ghz or so??, debating whether to go DDR or not....

Any suggestions welcome, like I said I won't be building til October or so, so some things might change. Just trying to get a rough idea.

October's a while away so but I'll give my recs, I agree nForce 220 may be da best option. Figure 150-200 for the mobo, then $50 or so for 256MB PC2100 (nForce is only for DDR), and then probably by then a 1GHz Morgan Duron will be good, and for the HD, I'd get a WD 20GB ATA/100 7200RPM hard drive, for $73 right now at pricewatch.

i also recommend the nforce board, but it requires you to buy the ram in pairs, because it is dual-channel (like the p4 boards). so, you will have to buy probably 2 sticks of 128mb ddr ram. also, i recommend the 1ghz duron over the t-bird, especially since he said he doesn't really play 3d games.

Nope. nForce 220 is Single Channel DDR, nForce 420 is Dual, so u will want 1 256MB stick of PC2100.
