help me become legit

i currently have xp pro "corp (vlk) edition" and am tired of the WGA stuff and would rather my machine be legal anyway.

i want to upgrade to vista soon. having xp pro, i cannot buy an upgrade edition (which is bs) but whatever...here is what i want to do:

i have my laptop, but its broke, mobo fried, so its just sitting there with a perfectly legal product key that i own. problem? it has xp home. i tried changing the product key but it wont accept my xp home one since this machine has xp pro, which is understandable. i want to do a reformat anyway, so a fresh install of windows is okay with me. my laptop didnt come with a windows cd, rather it came with a recovery cd, so i dont think i can use that to install windows on my desktop. is there anyway i can download it, or get a free disc from ms? i dont want to pay for a disc when i own the product key. what can i do?

you can download an oem xp home cd off the internet, but either way it still won't be legit. that product key is tied to the laptop. you can't transfer it to another computer (legally).

that sucks...im not planning on using the laptop again (costs less just to buy a new one then to fix it), so pretty much im screwed out of it. 🙁

okay...how about this:
install xp home, then go buy vista home basic upgrade. then i should be legal right?

Why don't you just get an OEM copy of vista?

nevermind...looks like i will have to go with vista premium (i want MCE, AERO, Flip 3d)...so i guess i can do that, and just deal with my copy of xp for another week.

no, really it isnt, considering its $100 just for the home basic upgrade retail, at least with oem i can do clean install...

so what restrictions am i looking at if i get oem? will microsoft only activate it with my current configuration?
