Slight change to the OP. I'm condensing and displaying a few things that I've priced out. If I get enough options listed I'd like some feedback on what other people would prefer or why 1 item might be better than the other.

Attempting to price out a ~1k laptop for the following needs:
- Plays WoW
- Clumsy person, can't be too fragile
- Travels all over the state
- Uses laptop mainly on bed or other casual furniture
- I want the laptop to be quality and lasting
- Office will be purchased separately

------------------------------------------------

Alienware M14x (1.4K)
- i7, 6GB, 3GB GT555, 1600x900, Backlit KB, DVD
- Pro/Cons: Best Video Card, Ugly Case, Lots of bling
Dell XPS 15 (1.4K)
- i7, 6GB, 2GB GT540, 1920x1080, Backlit KB, Bluray
- Pro/Cons: Best LCD, Big Laptop, Bluray, Potentially Beautiful Case, Ext Battery
Dell XPS 15z (1.1K)
- i5, 6GB, 1GB GT525, 1920x1080, Backlit KB, DVD
- Pro/Cons: Small, Possibly questionable construction quality
Asus G53SW-XN1 (1.2K)
- i7, 6GB, 1.5GB GTX460M, 1920x1080, Not Backlit, DVD
- Pro/Cons: Big laptop, Good cooling, Questionable LCD, Fast HDD
Sager NP5165 (1.4K)
- i7, 8GB, 2GB GT555, 1920x1080 Matte LED, Not Backlit, Bluray, Case
- Pro/Cons: Sexy laptop, Slightly heavy, Awesome specs, Consistent positive feedback.
Sager NP8130 (1.5K) from XoticPC
- i7, 8GB, 1.5GB GTX 560, 1920x1080 Matte LED, Not Backlit, Bluray, Case
- Pro/Cons: Sexy laptop, Slightly heavy, Awesome specs, Consistent positive feedback, No wait time on the Matte LED from XoticPC.

------------------------------------------------

I'm thinking of adding a poll, but I want to get as many options detailed as possible first.

If she is clumsy then I would recommend something with accidental damage coverage. Also, if the GPU is there, maybe consider a business class machine, they tend to be hardier and last longer than consumer systems.

Dell Latitude, Lenovo Thinkpad, HP Pro/Elitebook, that sort of thing.

Also, jeebus, 2200 and cheap laptop don't really belong in the same sentence. And this is coming from a Mac user.

If you act now, you might still be able to get in on the Lenovo T420i deal. I highly doubt that you would need a dedicated GPU for WoW if you get a Sandy Bridge processor with the Intel graphics.

I got an i3-2310, 4GB DDR3 (1 DIMM), 500GB 7200rpm hdd, Intel 6205 2x2 AGN wireless (dual-band), W7 HP 64-bit, 720p camera, and 1600x900 display for $687 before tax.

Also, skip buying Office through a manufacturer. Pick up the disc version of Home & Student through Amazon - $115 gives you 3 licenses for use in your household.

Wow, you really need to get laid if you're about to dish out $2200 for a WoW girl "friend". What a terrible financial decision.

QFT.

If playing WoW is about the extent of her game-playing and she travels all over the place, wouldn't portability/durability be more of a priority than being bleeding-edge?

If I was you, I'd:

- Stop, get away from being her tech support. Being an IT geek ain't going to help you get into her pants.

If you MUST play hopeless IT nerd in love:

- Maybe recommend a used/refurb system. The wife and I use refurb systems (UL80VT with intel core 2 SU7300/Nvidia 210M for her and Dell Studio 14 w/ core i5/AMD 540v for me) that we got for $4~500 and it suits our needs perfectly; it runs on WIN7 fine, I play SC2 (on lower settings) on mine, AND my Studio's display is a glorious 1600x900 resolution on a 14' chassis that I can mess around with in Photoshop or Silo, much better than some of the "new" $1k units for sale at Best Buy/Wally-World.

- There's also the Brazos platform neo-netbooks (HP DM1Z or Lenovo X120E) might work as well, they can be had for around $400 if I'm not mistaken . . ..

Having said that, I know that there's been some ridiculous deals on the Thinkpad T420 floating around . . ..

Don't know if you tried looking for Dell coupons or not but that XPS is way overpriced. Mine was only 1128 with NYC tax with similiar spec. The only difference I see is the video card and lojack.

If she is clumsy, the XPS is not her. Seem to fagile. Any drop and this laptop is done.

These were configured at www.xoticpc.com.

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8150-clevo-p150hm-p-2972.html?wconfigure=yes

You can save some money on MS Office by using OpenOffice instead.

http://www.openoffice.org/

This has a small SSD for the boot drive, but it's enough space to hold the operating system, World of Warcraft, and some tunes and pics -- just not every movie in her library. This would assume that she would store her large files either on an external hard drive or in the cloud. Alternately, she could go with a large hard drive as the only storage, which would be a bunch slower but would give her more space. How much space does her files take up?

The advantage of going with a Sager is that she gets a much better cpu, a much better gpu, and a much better boot & program drive, all for the same price.

Another option, and this might be better for your situation, is an Asus. The Asus has the same CPU, an arguably better gpu, and a MUCH better boot drive than the Dell, all for less money. It will run cool and quiet and it comes with a backpack, a mouse, and a one year accidental damage protection warranty.

The Asus is probably a better option in your case for a few reasons, even though the Sager has a better cpu and a better gpu than the other computers.

1. The Asus runs quiet and cool. It's the quietest of the three laptops mentioned on this thread.
2. The Vertex 3 Max IOPS is an awesome boot drive, much better option than the Intel SSD or a mere rotating HDD.
3. The Asus has two drive bays, so you can have both an SSD boot drive and a large data drive.
4. It's 10% less money than the other options.
5. It has a back-lit keyboard, the Sager does not.
6. It has a built in one-year accidental damage warranty, provided you register it when you buy it. At no additional cost.
7. It comes with a free back pack and mouse. And they are well designed and built -- high quality, not throw-away. My wife has an Asus G73JW with the matching backpack and mouse. She loves the backpack, but I stole her mouse to use myself. Muahahaha.
8. For the Asus build I listed, it includes MS Office, the full retail version including the disks in case you need to reinstall. You could save another $100 by dropping that, if you wanted, for only about $1900 total.
9. Student discount. Your price will be less than what is listed above, for either the Asus or the Sager.
10. Company reputation, compared to Dell. http://www.xoticpc.com/about-why-choose-xotic-ip-2.html

Either one of these is a better option for less money than the Dell XPS.

Err, Goddamn I shouldn't have mentioned who the laptop was for. Just to clarify here. I don't plan to explain my relationship with her here, but I am definitely not lacking in anything that this laptop is attempting to fulfill. I've seen her for more than a year. I did not meet her in WoW, I don't play WoW, however it is something she enjoys because she is living in a quieter town without any nightlife.

However, she does need a good laptop and I wanted to help her in the right direction, whether I pay for it, pay half, or don't pay at all is really not part of the concern.

I am not trying to get other good laptops for 2k, I am trying to get the 2.2k xps 15" down to a reasonable amount of cash without sacrificing good features. Seems the thread didn't pan out the way I had hoped....

No, but I've seen the benchmarks: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-3000.37948.0.html

You don't have to go with the XPS. Check out the laptops on Newegg. Plenty of computers with mid-range graphics cards for way under $2k. For example, take a look at stuff like the Asus G series. And I'd probably skip out on the mobile Blu-Ray drive; it generally adds a lot to the price of the notebook for not much benefit.

Here's another way if you don't want to mess with configuring. Asus G53 Prebuilt at $1200.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834230027

I don't know why I overlooked that. But the G73 is only 50 dollars more and it is a sandy bridge. Thoughts?

That is a good price range and apparently a sturdy laptop. Although I'd be leaving her without any support routes I guess. Which is no worse than her 8 year old laptop though.

G53SW and G73SW are both Sandy Bridge laptops. You want a Sandy Bridge laptop. Look for the 4th and 5th letter to be "SW" for Sandy Bridge cpu with Nvidia gpu.

The G53JW and G73JW are previous generation. Do not get these, they are outdated and surpassed by Sandy Bridge.

The difference between the G53 and G73 series is the screen size. 53 = 15" screen, 73 = 17" screen. For a girl, I would go with the 15" model, the G53. It's cheaper, still has two drive bays, still has the same resolution, and should be easier to carry.

Don't buy the Newegg one, buy the same model from www.xoticpc.com but configured exactly how you want it.

For a $2k budget, that's probably something like this:

wait for a dell coupon to hit fw or some place and dont upgrade all of those options.

seriously. 17" xps shipped free for 933. that i7 turboed would probably handily beat my desktops 3.1ghz quad core phenom...you dont need that horsepower to play WoW, you almost certainly dont need the extra 1gb of video, either, etc.

You suck at cheap. :) why an i7 ? Why 6gb ram ? why an xps ? Office Starter works just as well and is free.

You can get a laptop that suits her needs for $500 or less, plus whatever an extra warranty about dropping would cost. (or buy 4 of them if you want to spend 2 grand, she'll have 3 extras.)

btw, xps is heavy for a 15 inch, not what suits using it on the couch. Sounds like you are getting the laptop you want, not what's best for her.

A light 14 inch laptop, even 13 inch, would be a lot better for the usage you describe.

I updated the main post. The Sager 5165 seems very nice. Feel free to leave feedback. Obviously, any of these laptops could be priced cheaper and potentially be acquired during a sale, but I tried to spec them to their strong points, especially on the video card side because I feel video cards are very important in this type of situation.

If you know of any cons that would instantly cross one of these laptops off the list, please chime in, that would be extremely helpful.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Sager or XoticPC support?

We bought my wife's computer from xoticpc and I currently plan on buying my next laptop from them (unless I get suckered into pretty lights for an overpriced Alienware with poor customer service, which could happen -- I like pretty lights).

I've been able to talk to xoticpc on the phone whenever I wanted and it is easy (one button press -- 1 for sales, 2 for support, etc.) to reach an actual person that is a English speaking American without any problems or hassles and without paying extra money to do so. Typically I talk to J.P., but sometimes Brett.

We had some experience with their customer service. My wife's in her Asus G73JW SSD fried (Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB) and we got it replaced by xoticpc.com under warranty at no cost. We originally bought the computer in August 2010. And her first power brick died, too, and we got that replaced Just bad luck that we've had two failures in under a year, I suppose, but the replacements worked and now it's in good shape. That's why you get warranties, after all.

Much better experience than this poor guy:

Couple things:

I noticed that you pimped out the NP 5165 to cost $1400? Don't bother with the 5165 at that price tag. Grab the Sager NP 8130 instead.

Xotic PC (and all the major resellers) recently added the NP 8130-S1 package, which includes: 2630QM/8GB DDR3 1600/750Gb 7200/95% Gamut (Glossy) Screen...total: $1319. Otherwise it maintains the same GTX 560m.

I ordered my 8130 from xotic and they're awesome. All these little resellers are - they have to be, or their business will die in seconds. They don't have the name recognition of Dell or HP, so they work harder.

Another option is the HP dv6t QE (quad edition). http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/se...computer_store

When pimped out with a full HD screen and the 6770m 1GB (dont get the 2 gb, marketing hype imo), its a pretty nice little laptop. There's also a $200 off coupon right now: NB7376. It comes out to like $900.
