I bought A8V Deluxe socket 939 motherboard and 3400 processor combo deal at Tiger Direct in November of last year (2004). I have been trying to fix the problem all this time to no avail. All I hear is system failed cpu test :frown: I have read other forums, tried all their "fixes" to no avail. I recently bought a 3000 processor thinking that would fix the problem, but I still got the "system failed cpu test" message :disgust: I had also replace the motherboard 3 times, so I know the motherboard is not "broken". This is my first computer build ( I'm 16) so I am very fustrated!! Please respond.

Here are my specs:

Ultra X-connect 500 watt power supply
AMD 3400 and 3000 (bought 2 different ones)
Corsair Value Select Ram (2x512)
Geforce FX 5700 LE video card
Asus A8V deluxe socket 939 motherboard

Are you using BIOS 1009? Also try to boot with only 1 memory stick in slot DIMM B1. Try both sticks in that slot.

To eliminate the posibility of the motherboard shorting on the inside of the case somewhere, remove the motherboard from the case and try to get it to boot with cpu (hs/fan), one stick of memory and the video card. If it boots up outside of the case, then you have narrowed down the problem to a short.

I doubt you received three bad boards in a row, there has got to be something you have overlooked or are doing wrong. ;)

A few things to check

1. Is CMOS jumper in the correct position?
2. Have you tried clearing CMOS?
3. Is the HSF properly installed with thermal pad or thermal paste? not both
4. Is the CPU fan spinning on startup? Is the CPU fan properly connected to the mobo?
5. Double check the 4pin aux connector near the CPU, is it correctly plugged and making proper contact? test the output at this connector with a multi-meter
6. Test the 20pin mobo connector with a mult-meter
7. Do you have another power supply that you can test with (The UltraX Connect is notorious for causing problems)

My guess is the power supply is your problem and is not feeding the correct amps/volts to the 4pin aux or the 20pin main connector or both.

I think Im using Bios 1009. I sent it to Asus to get flashed and they said they put the latest bios on the chip. I'll try those ideas of yours. Thanks guys.

By the way guitardaddy would the post reporter still say "system failed cpu test" if it was the power supply problem? And also is the Ultra X connect power supply really notorios for causing problems?

1. Is CMOS jumper in the correct position? Yes
2. Have you tried clearing CMOS? many times
3. Is the HSF properly installed with thermal pad or thermal paste? not both ( I removed the thermal pad from the 3000 and put Artic silver 5 on.
4. Is the CPU fan spinning on startup? Is the CPU fan properly connected to the mobo? Yes
5. Double check the 4pin aux connector near the CPU, is it correctly plugged and making proper contact? test the output at this connector with a multi-meter Checked the 4 pin cable. Its connected. Im having my dad bring home from work another ATX power supply.6. Test the 20pin mobo connector with a mult-meter WIll check
7. Do you have another power supply that you can test with (The UltraX Connect is notorious for causing problems) My dad is bringing home another power supply. Will see if that works.

My guess is the power supply is your problem and is not feeding the correct amps/volts to the 4pin aux or the 20pin main connector or both.

Yes, your symptoms exactly match a couple of people I've worked with, and in both cases it was improper connection of the 4pin aux. You definately get the CPU failed if your not getting power to this connector.

And yes the UltraX is notorious for problems. I have worked with at least 5 people here and other forums whose problems where traced back to the UltraX. One guy here had his whole rig fried by an UltraX. I have also seen people who aren't having problems with their UltraX. But its widely reported that the UltraX is a chromed and rebranded Powermax (generic quality) powersupply. They are very cool looking, but evidently quality wise they are a POS.

I hope with a different PS your problems will go away, I know you must be extremely frustrated not being able to use your new rig for several months now:(
If it does turn out to be a PS problem, you have learned a valuable computer building lesson the hard way!

The power supply is the most important component in any system, all other components depend on it. NEVER cut corners, or pick style over substance when choosing a PS. ALWAYS stick with the proven guality manufacturers Antec, Enermax, OCZ, Seasonic, PC Cooling, Fortron etc....

Good luck and let us know how it goes:)

I had that exact same problem.

Changing from an Antec True 380S to an Enermax Noisetaker 485W fixed it and it's been running just fine ever since.

And make sure you plug in your ram into the slots the manual tells you to.
