Help matching card to new monitor?

My old reliable Viewsonic CRT is dying, and I need to get a new monitor posthaste. I'm eyeing the Dell 2407WFP, which requires a video card that supports WUXGA rez (1920 x 1200). My current card is a 2-year old ATI Radeon X600 in an All-in-Wonder card, 256 MB, and only goes up to 1600 x 1200.

Let's assume for the sake of argument that I'll get another ATI-manufactured card. (Nothing against NVidia--just easier for me to compare specs right now from just one maker.) I've been looking on Newegg, and figure I'd better go a bit higher than the minimum specs required for this monitor, just to be safe. BTW, I have a PC Power & Cooling 510 PSU w/a seperate line for the graphics card, so I'm covered there, as long as the wattage requirements aren't too hihg.

Anyway, I don't game, so I don't need the latest and greatest (and most expensive) card. I do do some video editing, tho just for fun. I would like to go to 512 MB RAM (owners of this monitor on Dell site say it requires at least 256 MB), and figure it might be a good idea to pick a card w/a max resolution a bit higher than that required of the monitor, just to give me some wiggle room. Oh, and I'll be using PCIe x 16.

That said, I was looking at this card: ATI 100-437808 Radeon X1650PRO 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 for $187.99. ATI card

I'm planning on building a new system sometime before the end of the year, so I don't want to put a ton of $$ into the graphics on my current 2-year old build. I just need something to run the new monitor properly, and get me thru to the next build. Will this card do the trick? Thanks.

For your needs, a X1650 Pro 256 MB will be amply enough, as you are not into gaming. You are looking for sufficient video performance and the ability to display 1920x1200

Please read this X-Bit Labs article that should answer all your questions on this subject. To sum up the conclusion, anything above a X1600 Pro do the job well.

As another consideration, I am not convinced that your X600 can't display 1920x1200 with the proper driver. Someone else can confirm this or not.

Im not up to scratch with all the video cards going on now, but I do believe a x1950pro is faster than a 1650 right?

1950pro has GDDR3 memory and 256-bit memory interface. If it were me, I would go for this.

Cheapest one I could find

A big beautiful monitor deserves a good video card! Anything 1650ish and above will work fine. Remember to keep in mind most 512mb cards use 128bit memory and are outperformed by the 256bit version no matter what.

Thanks for all the advice. Since there isn't much diff in price between the 1650 and the 1950, I'll probably just get the 1950.

On a related note, maybe you guys can clue me in on what's going on w/video cards re: TV tuners? As I mentioned in my OP, I currently have an All-in-Wonder w/a TV tuner. Didn't use it a lot, but occasionally found it handy. Now I can't find any available ATI cards w/a tuner.

Did the addition of a tuner to a video card just become such a headache for the makers, that now tuners must be purchased seperately?

ATI quit making the All In Wonder versions of its cards. Most likely an engineering offload of the technology. Bigger better could be created using separate device.
