Help make sure proper DDR2 ram installation (slots)

Hi,
I have recently purchased new ram to make my outdated Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 faster.
My motherboard, which is Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 has 4 slots for ram all together.
I currently have 2gb of ram (2x1gb configuration). Both sticks were installed in the neighbouring slots. However, a friend of mine who knows computers better than me re-installed my ram so one stick is installed in one set of slots and the other is installed in the second set of slots (as seen on the attched photo), he said it will boost my performance.
So now I would like to add additional 2gb (again 2X1gb) sticks. However, the latency on my current ram is 5-5-5-12, and the latency on my new ram is 5-5-5-18. Otherwise, it is the same model, speed and timing.

SO my question is this, since I would now have 2 sticks of one timing and 2 sticks of another latency, how should I go about the installation? Should I make sure my old ram is installed in one set of slots and the newer one on the second set of double slots? Or should I mix them up and just fill up the empty slots (as seen on the photo), without touching the current configuration?

Hope I explained clearly.
Thanks!

(Basically, should I just add my new ram to the two empty slots or take the current 2 sticks and place them one besides the other and place my newer ram sticks one beside the other as well?)

Match the ram in pairs.... One set in black slots, the other in red slots. Do not mix.
It will default to the slower timings for both sets.

This. Don't worry about the slower timings, having more RAM, even if a touch slower, will be very beneficial (especially starting from 2GB).
