EDIT: First question answered

I will be traveling internationaly to go to school(Perth, Australia), I will be staying for the next year or so with family(my uncle and aunt).

You could consider this a thread to give me suggestions on what to take to make my stay in my new land better. I have the following so far...

Digital Camera (though I could use a new one so feel free to make suggestions)
Laptop
Ipod Video

Any suggestions?

Buy used, since that way it won't get stolen.

/edit: Oh, and you DON'T want luggage that "looks decent", you want luggage that looks like crap...boring crap, but crap.

Ok, any suggestions where to look? I found This on Overstock, what do you think?

Probably too small for a year.

In all honestly, I'd recommend heading down to your local thrift shop. Buy something big and wheeled that is fairly robust, lockable, has some sort of protection for the contents (ie not soft sides), and doesn't have any unusual stains or smells 😛

The other thing you can do is get a big traveller's backpack...not quite as much storage as a suitcase, but a lot easier to carry around, especially if you have to walk through the city with all your stuff to get to a train station, or something 🙂

Well I won't have to carry it around town, I had considered a backpack though. By thriftshop do you mean pawnshop? I could check there I guess, I thought the deals on Overstock were pretty good. I will keep in mind not to get anything too fancy though.

No, I mean places like Goodwill, Value Village, etc...whatever's in your area.

Pawn shops are usually overpriced.

Those aren't bad prices on overstock (obviously much more than Goodwill, though), but make sure it's big enough for all the stuff you want.

Buy luggage in person unless you know the brand because you need to see how sturdy the stuff really is. A lot of luggage looks the same on the outside but is made of thin crappy material and is put together poorly. Try discount stores like marshalls or TJMax for mixed pieces of luggage. And don't buy black, everybody has freaking black luggage.

I picked up a really nice Pathfinder brand rolling suitcase a few years back that has held up incredibly well. The wheels are rollerblade style (good wheels make a world of difference), the collapsible handle is well constructed, and the fabric is very thick with good stitching.

check marshalls, tj maxx, ross, etc. i have seen samsonite sold for good prices at that type of store. not sure how common that is so you might want to call your local stores and ask.
