It's to mark Hawai'i as a 2 syllable word. You say Hawi then prounounce the last i as if you're pronouncing a long e.

If that's the case then why do they type out the bowl game name as Hawaii Bowl instead of Hawai'i Bowl? I've never seen this spelling in any previous Hawaii football game... Not that I watch them on a regular basis.

Well in some places they show the ' and in others they don't. Just noticed the ' on the jersey for the first time too. Weird.

edit: im probably not totally correct. its not an apostrophe either, i think its called an okina or something? also i have no idea how to spell things so that they are pronounced properly.

hawaiian class was back in elementary and fuck if i remember much from back then.

here you go from wiki: in standard American English, Hawaii is generally pronounced /h?'wa?.i?/. In the Hawaiian language, it is generally pronounced [h?'w?i?i] or [h?'v?i?i].

and the ' is an okina. you can find that on wiki too

Much the same as O'ahu...commonly Oahu.

Pronounced Oh-ahu, not Owahu.

There are many such words in the Hawaiian language.
