My question is what I should consider when I am looking at different kinds of HDs that will provide a high output of performance (looking at 40GB 7200), and what is the best brand of HD manufacturer

Storage review has a database where you can compare up to 6 drives based on their performance in various benchmark applications. Hurry, the site is shutting down soon.

Brands are all good, Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate... IBM had many problems with their 75 GXP model, but other than that they are good too.

NewEgg.com has low prices, by the way.
