Ny friends gateway he bought back in '97 just crashed on him. He is in desperate need of a new comp and since the days of building your own for cheaper are gone he will probably just buy a prebuilt from a major manufacturer. Since its been about 1.5 years since my last rebuild I'm kinda out of the new hardware scene.

What are some good options for him? He mainly wants to use the internet and watch DVD's. He does not game on his PC so he can save on graphics. He wants what I absolutly do not, a barbones cheap PC. A quick search came up with these Dell's and they price seems great.

Are there some secrets that I don't know?

Thanks,

There are lots of ideas for budget systems. Anandtech has a section, as does sharkeyextreme.com

You're right for building power/gaming machines but for basic machines: $400 is hard to beat with legit software liscenses.
