I installed the (internal) Lite-on combo drive in my dad's box earlier this year. It's been working just fine since then. The other day, for no apparent reason, it stopped reading and writing. It won't read CDs or DVDs of any kind, and it won't burn CDr discs.

Everything seems to be working fine, however. It turns on when the computer turns on. The drive tray ejects. Windows recognizes it. I even uninstalled it from Hardware, then did a new hardware search and let Windows reinstall it...it recognizes it but still won't read or write. It shows that there's no disc in the drive, it just opens up a blank window. Operating system is Win XP Home, btw.

Anyone have any ideas? Is the drive just dead? Is there something I can do?

you need to very carefully follow the installation instructions..

i believe the documentation for the combo drive is available here
lite-on combo manual

it specifically says to set the Master/slave jumper on the Combo drive to "Master" and connect the drive to the secondary IDE port.

your hard disk should be set as "Master" on IDE port 1
if you have another CD drive, you must set it to "SLAVE" on the second IDE port.

if you don't set the drive up this way, i believe you can have the kind of problems your taking about.

hope this helps.

I've seen cdrom drives just "go bad" and go from working to not working overnight.

You might want to run a cdrom cleaner cd in it just for grins before
throwing in the towel on this one.

I think I have it setup as hdd1 = ide1 master, combo drive = ide2 master, cd-rom = ide2 slave, but I'll double check tomorrow.

also thx jyates for the cleaner ...never used one before but what the heck.

This sounds like a domestic dispute, you need to calmy discuss your problem the optical drive. If that does not help, i suggest getting a shovel and taking it for a drive in the country!

PS Rememeber if you are too lenient with this component, it will only encourage the rest of your PC to slack off!!

rofl...as soon as I read "domestic dispute" and "you need to calmly discuss your problem" I thought of the Cops tv show. I can just see me in some dumpy area, standing outside my front door with a screwdriver through the middle of the drive..."Is it dead? Is there anything I can do?"

hahahahaha
