I just got a new Wireless G access point router and a wireless G pcmcia card for my laptop. The laptop keeps dropping the connection all the time. Even when it is right next to the access point.
What can I do to fix this???

Are you able to transfer any data at all? How long does the connection last?

If its a matter of seconds, make sure you have WEP configured correctly (if its installed.) If its a matter of minutes I have no clue what could be causing it to drop unless you have a rediculous ammount of interference inside your house (some cordless phones, other electronics etc.)

I would send an e-mail to linksys anyway and see what they have to say about it.

Good luck

I have WEP turned on. I am pretty sure it is configured correctly. There is a check box on that says use 802.1x authenication in the XP wireless network connection window. Should I have this checked?

The laptop that is dropping the connections is running Win XP Home... I don't know if that matters.

Also, it drops the connection about every 5 minutes and it takes like 30 seconds or so for it to refind it.

Do you have all the TCP/IP settings correct? I.E. DHCP for dynapic IP addressing or the static IP & DNS info for static IP addressing?

I would send linksys an email. or go to their web site and search for any issues they may have documented about your setup.

Good luck

I have static IPs setup. I sent linksys support an email and looked around on the website.

Anything else you suggest?

Do you have the DNS and gateway settings correct? The DNS is provided by the ISP, the gateway IP is the IP of the router.

Yes, I do have the DNS and gateway setting correct, I know this because when I connected the laptop with with the wireless card through the wired ethernet card directly to access point router it works.

So based on this it is something specific with the wireless card that seems to be causing the connection to get dropped. Would turning the speed down from the 54 mbps to 11 mbps help? I am running out of ideas and I don't really think there is any interference that would be causing this.

Sure, Its worth a try to force the connection at a lower rate i.e 11 mbps. Its juut funny that the connection works for a few minutes only to drop. I'm interested to hear what linksys has to say. Keep me posted if you'd be so kind.

I tried lowering the connection and that didn't do anything. (I lowered it to 11Mbps. ) I emailed linksys support and they said to make sure the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) was turned off. I turned it off and the connection lasted for 3-4 minutes but still doesn't work. I sent Linksys another email but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

I used an internal Dell true mobile card and it connected it at 11 mbps and held the connection.... I am not sure if it is the Wireless G PCMCIA card or the technology is too new.

Any other ideas anyone?
