I spilled a cup of Coke on my Compaq 3000 keyboard. Turned it off immmediately, wiped off, and dried up. Now computer works fine but the keys are maddenlingly sticky and typing is a hassle. Does anyone know how to dissassemble the keys and what they need to be cleaned off with. Is water ok or what material is good to use. Acutaly does warranty cover spills? Thanks a lot!

You'll need to remove the keyboard from the laptop by disassembling the laptop piece by piece. Typically it is held on by 5-6 screws accessible from the bottom. Then use a cloth and a little bit of water as necessary to remove the stickiness. Make sure everything it very well dried before you put it back into the laptop and reattach it.

Dell's CompleteCare additional warranty does cover spills of this nature, but most regular warranties do not cover spills of any kind. You'll have to look at the warranty to determine it for yourself.

Thanx a lot for the advice. Do you happen to knowwhether you can pop the keys out of the keyboard without doing the whole disassembly and clean with isopre... alcohol. I have done it on a PC keyboard stand alone and it was no problem but I do not know how laptop ones are manufactured. I appreciate your help

You may be better in the long run by just replacing it. I know on Dell's it is a real pain to pop off and relpace each key.

i had orange juice spilled over my keyboard once, btw im running acer340T. Quite easy to do, order the keyboard from you distributer and unscrew the back panel only! remove your old keyboard and replace the new one

Dont bother removing and cleaning the keys, it doesnt work. you are better off getting a new keyboard. At least your laptop looks new again..

hope it helps

I don't know with a Compaq, but it can be done on the Dell's as someone else stated. It is a pain to do though and you run a risk of breaking the keys as they're not usually meant to be removed. Cleaning the keyboard while still in the laptop runs the risk of spilling more liquid and further damagining it. I'd suggest removing it if at all possible before you tackle any serious cleaning.
