I spilled a cup of Coke on my Compaq 3000 keyboard. Turned it off immmediately, wiped off, and dried up. Now computer works fine but the keys are maddenlingly sticky and typing is a hassle. Does anyone know how to dissassemble the keys and what they need to be cleaned off with. Is water ok or what material is good to use. Acutaly does warranty cover spills? Thanks a lot!

Unless you have a special warranty like complete care, no, it does not cover you spilling coke on it.

They should be cleaned with isoprophy alcohol and allowed to dry, as far as I can guess. I assume you can just pop them off with a flat head, but i've only done it on the Dell's, not on the compaq's.

The thing about Coke is there is sugar. If it gets down in say where the key stems go through plastic sometimes even cleaning will never bring it back to like new again. You can try and do what the other person here suggested, and use isoprophy alcohol. I have saved a few but laptop keyboards are so tight in tolerances. Good luck. You might be able to find a replacement keyboard on Ebay. Bought one for my older Compaq Presario Laptop there and it was in perfect shape.

It really depends on how the laptop it built. The Compaq Presarios I have owned which are older p2 models you took out 3 screws and the front opened up and you could then get to the keyboard and lift it out. Some newer Dells and Toshibas just had a strip of plastic that popped out that heald it down. If you do take out the keyboard to clean it be carefull of the ribbon cables that you don't fracture them or break the connectors on the motherboard. Some of the laptop keyboards I have worked on if you take them all the way apart you may never get them back to gether properly. Be carefull whatever you do.

I had spilled OJ on my laptop once. The keys got very sticky. I had to open up the front remove the keypad and clean it with buckets of clean water.
The keypad does not have any microprocessor inside it so it is quite safe to say that you can keep it under running water to clean it. Make sure you dry it well before you re-install the keypad by keeping it under a cooling fan. Also make sure you do not use any abrasive detergents to clean. Just water should be fine to remove all your sugary coke spill.
