HELP!! Laptop can't resume, System process @ 100%

I am using Win XP on Dell Insprion 8200, when I close the screen the laptop goes into standby. Often times when I reopen the screen to bring it out of standby, the System process stuck at 100%. This makes machine useless and I have to reboot it.
Any ideas?

Have you checked your BIOS settings on how the computer responds when the lid is closed/opened?

In the Power management section of the bios, the Display close option is set to suspend. In windows power management it is set to put the machine into standby.
One of the perplexing things about this problem is that this started after I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP Pro.

BTW, I have gotten the most recent updates/patches for XP.
