Help! Lan internet sharing

I'm living in a dorm. One of my port doesn't work so I have to share internet with my roomate with a linksys 10/100 network hub. Me and him can both use the internet at the same time, but we get disconnect regularly. I have windows xp so when I went to network connection and tried to renew my ip, it failed to do so but i still manage to use the internet. I went to check my connection quality and I got alot of packetloss. Is there a way for me and my roomate to get our own ip addresses and have a reliable connection? Thx in advance

Call the school's networking people and tell them to fix the port. Or buy a router. That would work a lot better than a hub.
