i've been experiencing some lagouts whenever i play cs, or css. they don't happen in wc3. didn't know where to post this, dunno if its a hardware, networking, etc, problem...

after playing for about 30 minutes, i lag out. the screen freezes, and after a few minutes, it says my connection was lost, not only in cs, but also in vent, irc, the works. i am unable to reconnect, start task manager or any programs, and am forced to restart, which indicates to me that it could potentially be a software/memory/pagefile problem. what's the problem? is it time for a new comp?

I would look at NIC driver first. Do you have the latest? Are there any known bugs with the driver you have now?

Shot in the dark, but try going in to the advanced properties for the network adapter and disabling TCP Checksum Offload.

if the lights on your modem are fine when you lag out, then this is definetely a software problem.

usually you dont need NIC drivers for a NIC to work because windows has most of the drivers embedded. and proof of that is the your NIC works at all. if windows did not have the drivers for that NIC, then it wouldnt work at all. I think the culprit is a process running. at the best of situation you can just disable it, but if its a virus/malware/other crap thats causing this, I would just format.

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Your Adapter -> Right click to Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Select Checksum Offload -> Change dropdown to Disable -> Save out and test.

In that same set of Advanced setting you may also want to look at "Optimize for" and see if it is set to "Throughput" or "CPU." I would set it to Throughput and check to see if that improves the lag as well.

I mention the checksum offload because I have played at least one network multiplayer game where having offload enabled caused random lag-outs and disconnects.

yeah, the modem is left on...and the checksum offload is nowhere in that advanced tab, nor is the optimize for option.

Those options are present in every Windows installation I've used. Maybe your NIC driver doesn't support them.
