help!!! just want some v. of linux to work...

Just downloaded Slackware b/c I couldn't get my Mandrake working, pathetic isn't it? And i remember that I'm supposed to do something b4 starting it up (i've had it on this comp, something in windows, editing a file, like entering a drive)
but when i load it up (linux.bat) it just leaves me at this:

scsi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detected total.
Partition check:
hda : hda1
VFS: Cannot open root device 08:04
Kernal panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:04

Any idea's ?..
