HELP! Just toasted my PC!

I was finaly playing Unreal II when my screen whent black. I was thinking my system crashed (firt time with U2) as I whent for the reset, I noticed my hard drives starting to spin down as it was shutting down and then I saw smoke and smelled something burning. I pulled the plug and tried finidng the source and feel for hot spots. I checked my CPU first and it seemed fine and was at normal temerture after running, then the graphics card, the motherboard chipset and the rest of the chips I could find.

I found nothing, unplugged everything from my power backup except for the system and monitor and tried to turn it on. The fans go on (including the CPU fan from the motherboard) the hard drives spin up and everything as usual but there monitor does not turn on. Also my motherboards LED indicators did not turn on at all. My motherboard is a MSI K7T Turbo-R.

My guess the motherboard coocked as the LEDs are dead and they always worked before.

ANybody have any other ideas what cold be wrong and if anything can be done about.

And unfortunately I need my computer almost emidietly so I was wondering if ther is a retail store like Best Buy I can go to buy some computer parts including a motherboard to plug into my system and see if it runs.

Thank You

Ouch! I would recommend if you are pressed for time to just go and buy a good motherboard like the Asus A7N8X Deluxe, which is very good if you have read the reviews.

Good luck, a situation like this happened to me last summer!

Removed all the components from the system and and still no lights and beeps from the motherboard and the CPU fan does not turn on instantly, but actualy takes a few secconds. Anybody think it could anything other then the motherboard. Also my power suply whent bad recently so I bought an Antec SL400 and it workded fine. Could the two be related, and is it possible that my old PSU may actualy be good and it is that my motherboard was bad, or did the PSU kill the motherboard?

If it is the motherboard, does anybody know of were I can get a cheep but preferebly decent DDR Athlon motherboard?

THanks aggain.

I would love to get the A7N8X and I would love to get any nForce2 motherboard, but unless I realy need it, it is a little to expensive. I have been looking for a DDR motherboard as I thought of the posibility of a dead motherboard three days ago when my PSU whent bad, and I got in on the Crucial 512 MB DDR deal, but I am only looking to spend under one hundred dollars so unless I am wrong my options are of the nForce1 VIAKT266/333 and possible some 400s kind. If the is a decent but stripped down nForce2 motherboard out there I would like to know about it as well.

Thanks aggain.

Are you sure the old PS is bad? It's possible the new Antec went bad, I'd try the old PS with only the mobo attached, can't hurt?

There are several nForce2 boards available for $100 or less, MSI K7N and EPOX 8RDA come to mind.

buy a new powersupply and see if that works, or it u can, borrow a spare. this same exact situation happened to me yesterday. i plugged it 1 stick ram, cpu, vid card, and thats it and everything spins but not output to monitor. when i connect one HD, it would spin for like couple seconds then shutdown. i too smelled something funny out of my powersupply, but not a burning smell. but in my case the MB light turned on.

also, when i removed the bad PS, it was rated as 250 watts, but multiplying the 12v with the amp, and 5v with the amp, actually is only a true 200 watt system. and my system was loaded up with 2 HD and 2 CD, lots of fans, etc. suprized it worked for that long.

Now the fan does not spinn at all and only the LED turns on with the old or new PSU. Most likely with the board hot the connectors were just enough but with it cooling doin andcontracting the connectors on the motherboard seperated so my guess is the motherboard.

So which one should I get the 8RDA or the K7N2-L. I am still and MSI fan despite the dead motherboard and I never used EPOX before. They have nearly the same features, 6RDA has firewire which I don't need so that is fine. I read the anand review for it and is the only benefit of the plus the 6 chanel audio?

And one more thing. How much space is there for the CPU fan. I don't plan on using anything to big for now, just the Thermaltake Volcano 5.

Thanks

I assume the PS fan is working?

I once 'jump started' a computer by using an airgun on the power supply then turning on the pc. once on, I went to newegg and bought a new case and PS.

I bought the K7N2-L from newegg. I sure hope it otherwise I have some big problems.

The power suply fan is working on the old and on the new PSU, nothing from the motherboard other then the power and HD LED.

cool...
i had exausted every idea I had, including MULTIPLE 'technical taps' (more like drops) of the power supply before thinking about jump starting it.

good luck.

Just got my motherboard, the MSI K7N2-L. But before I install it I have a question.

I installed the VIA latency patch as well as the Vortex2 for my old KT133A. The question is will these settings hard the new nForce motherboard or comrimize stability? And if so, how should I remove these programs and settings and is safe mode a safe option.

Also since my system used VIA drivers before, could there be a problem with migrating to the nForce without removing the old drivers.

As far as formating, I have a nearly full 80 GB HD and no way of bavking it up so formating or anything of the type is sompletely out of the question.

As far as drivers go, I read somewere that there is a way to reset the XP driver datatbase to the default windows settigns so it would reditect and reinstall all drivers. If there is such a thing, please tell me how to do it just in case.

Thanks

dont be silly, partition that drive and throw all your data on the second partition and then reformatt and reinstall!

Are you kidding Dreadogg, What am I going to install MS DOS? Whell my disk isn't that full but is quite close. Don't meen to sound bad but then I might as well format.

And just as I feared, Windows cannot boot. It gets stuck while the starting windows logo is apearing. And Win XP has the stupitest safe mode I have ever encountered. I have not encoutered a single case were a windows XP system sould boot into safe mode when it had any problems what so ever booting into normal windows. So exactly what part of safe mode is actualy safe if it does not work.

Since format and partition are not options I am doing the only thing I can which is a repair install.

And jsut in case sanybody did not guessm the motherboard did burn. After inspecting it, I clearly saw that something was complete toasted in the corner between the 3rd and 4'th PCI slot.

with how XP works, I'm not surprised a new mobo won't allow it to boot.

It won't boot if you change where the HD is. You want to move your cables around for better airflow and move which channel its on, gotta reinstall.

With how windows keeps drivers around, I would never do anything less than a full reinstall after upgrading a motherboard. There are ways around it, but I have found it to be adding places for instability.

well its really your own fault that your not doing backups regularly and have not had your drive set up properly to begin with. I guess your Info on your drive was really not worth that much to you. Good luck dude
