HELP! I've been gettin popup messages on my computer

I've been getting pop up messages for a few months now. I originally thought it was AIM but it wasn't on and I still got it. It's a small popup window that appears in the middle of my screen and it says messenger service. I'm running win xp pro with AVG virus protection and AIM loaded on my task bar (but not turned on) Any help?
 
turn off the windows messaging service. search the forums or google for it. was asked some times before
 
Disable Windows Messenger.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Right-click Messenger > Properties > Startup Type dropdown > disabled.
 
Control panel > administrative tools > Services > scroll down to Messenger > right click Properties > Startup Type = disable > Apply > right click again, choose stop. done.
