most every time i try to capture a video i get breaks in the playback and it captures to different clips. sometimes this happens when the camera isn't connected to the computer at all...so it seems like its on the camera's end of things, although it seems to happen more often when they're connected.

this makes it almost impossible to capture a video, as i have to recapture and overlap with a video editor, taking 10x as long.

any advice?

What software are you using, and what are the specs of your system?

And what do you mean by, "it happens when the camera isn't connected"? You meat you get stutters on the camera itself, while recording? Have you tried a different MiniDV tape or brand of MiniDV tapes?

i get stutters on play back randomly, not a specific location on the tape. ive tried dozens of tapes...many brands. it stutters more often when connected to the pc.

pc is core 2 duo 4gb blah blah and sony vegas 8.

Well that definitely sounds like a camera problem:

1. It happens both on the camera playback and on computer playback (so it's not computer-related)

2. It happens across multiple taples & brands (so it's not tape-related)

I've had my HV20 for yeeeaaars and have no kinds of stuttering problems, so I'd advise an RMA ASAP! Sounds like some sort of glitch with the camera's playback feature.

Another question: once you import into the PC and transcode the capture to a video file, does it still skip? i.e. does it record the stutters digitally into your PC file?

it changes clips when capturing so there are gaps in the video instead of capturing to 1 big video file.

Have you tried importing with a different program? If you're using the Sony program, doesn't it start a new clip if there is a dropped frame? That why I use Videostudio X2 to do my importing. But it sounds like the camera needs to be looked at.
