My main concern is the possibility of engaging in the unauthorized practice of law in jurisdictions outside my own. I am licensed to practice law in Texas, not nation -or even worldwide.
I understand that concern. But, wouldn't it be "safe and legal" to do so with a disclaimer of some type being prominently posted on the forum?
Also, the "house expert" would not be expected to offer true legal advice, but some clarity and direction.
For example, recently one of my members posed a question that he was told it is illegal to have a lease period of more than 24 months in his State, (Illinois). Couldn't the attorney on board say something to the effect, "Well, Jim, here in Texas that is not the law. I also have an attorney friend in Florida, and he informs me that isn't the law there, either. You may want to verify this before taking it at face value."
Would that be terribly wrong? If so, how do well know attorneys like Bill Bronchik get away with replying to posts on various real estate websites?
Better still, DA, have you visited freeadvice.com? How on earth can they do this, then?
