Help! - Is there a way to allow users without admin privileges to burn CD's in Win2k?

I've looked all over and not found a workaround for this problem. Currently, in both nero and EZ cd creator, you must have administrative privileges to burn CD's. I run a small network and I definitely do not want individual users to have admin privileges or to have the admin password. Surely there is a way to change security settings, etc. to allow them to use the burner?

Please don't tell me to use the "run as" command, as again I do not want to give users the admin password...

Use the "Run As ..." service. Edit the properties of your shortcut and activate the "Run as another user" checkbox. Whenever you run the program, you now have the choice to run the executable as if you were an administrator.

The tool works for WindowsUpdate, Computer Management (minus DIskeeper, I think). Outside of some really heavy hardware configuration changes, I may never totally log in as admin again.

I had the same problem at work. The solution was to use regedt32 (we are running NT 4.0) find the section of the registry that deals with Adaptec Easy-CD Creator, then give everybody full permission to that section of the registry.

You can not do it using regedit, you must use regedt32.

It should be HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Adaptec or something similiar

Sorry I can't be more specific. I'm not running either piece of software at home right now.

Bockie -- Thanks for the reply. I tried doing this but wasn't able to get it working. Could you please tell me exactly the registry keys that you changed, and what permissions you granted?

Thanks!

until a few days ago, I had never logged in as an administrator on my 2 month old win2k install. I only used a master user. I used the admin to set up a very lame duck log in for my bro.

Its in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software (At least with EZCD Creater 3.5), just modifying the permissions on the adaptec portion of the registry did not work. We had this same problem at school. I don't remember what the exact permissions are, and I'm at home now, so you'll have to experiment a little with that. Hope this helps.

Bouds--

So did you get it to work at all by modifying other portions of the registry? How about being a bit more specific here? -- please!

Anyone else know exactly which registry keys must be modified?

The whole HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software portion of the registry must be given either modify or full permissions, at least thats what we've found with our machines at school. It may differ with Nero, but thats how we solved it for EZCD creator 3.5c

bouds got it right. Make sure you give everybody full control to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Adaptec (or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software would work as well - I'm one of those that only gives permission where absolutely necessary) folder as well as all of it's subfolders.

I'll check Monday at work on our NT boxes if you are still having problems.

Update - Thanks again guys! modifying the registry as above did the trick very nicely. Now why the hell can't adaptec mention that anywhere on their site? ;)
