Help is Needed For Drives Mapping

Hello,
I use Autodesk mechanical desktop, and I use its external references(xref)feature very often on many of the drawings that I have done. I am thinking of setting up my computer as a server so that i can access my drawings remotely. But because of the xref feature, i am not sure how to set up my server with something like drives mapping so that I can solve this xref problem and being able to access my drawings remotely.

Someone told me that he is sure that dial-up VPN can be used to solve this problem. Is there any other approach better than dial-up VPN? Or any special software that I can use?

Initially, i was thinking about setting up my ftp site, by i am really not too sure if i can do drives mapping with ftp.

Bear in mind that I don't not want fancy and expensive solution, any help or suggestions or comments will be very much appreaciated !!!

Thank You Very Much.

Thank you for the reply. I am thinking of installing Windows NT Server 4.0 to the server and I'll be using wind98SE2 to access the drawings remotely.

What would the connections be at each end? How large are the files you will be working with. I'm assuming the xref thing is a network resource you can use, how much bandwidth does it need, can you install it at the othe location? You can use NT4 server for vpn but if you have 56k dialups on both ends it may not be worth it. It would take you forever to get work done.
