i used a win ME boot disk to get into command prompt with CD support. when i try to read my CD1 of mandrake 8.2, it gives me an error and says the CD is not in a high sierra or valid ISO mode. i try my other 2 disks, and they both work. is my first CD burned bad? i burned it yesterday and i just ran checksum on it. there are no problems. so should i reburn it? thnx. also, can i start the linux install in windows? or do i have to go boot disk to do it? thnx

Why not boot from the Mandrake CD? Just set your boot sequence to do CD before your HD.

i tried booting from disc 2, and it gave me this command line type of thing except it had:

>boot:

i didnt know what to type/do after that...disc 1 doesnt seem to work, i just reburned it and it still wouldnt work. in windows, it says "incorrect function"..guess like im going to have to download the ISO again

Have you tried booting from CD1? You can also use the rawrite feature that is on CD1, I believe.
Ah. I searched my Mandrake CD and found this in a README.

3 - If your computer cannot boot from the CDROM and previous methods
do not work, you must make a boot floppy under Windows as follows:
* insert the CDROM, then open the icon "My Computer", right click
on the CDROM drive icon and select "Open"
* go into the "dosutils" directory and double-click on the
"rawwritewin" icon
* insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive
* select "D:\images\cdrom.img" in the "Image File" field (assuming that
your CDROM drive is "D:", otherwise replace "D:" as needed)
* select "A:" in the "Floppy Drive" field then click on "Write".

To begin the installation, insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the
boot floppy if necessary, then restart the computer.

Hope this helps.

Hay just a shot in the dark make sure that the partition that your temp file is on has enough space for the humongus download!
